The Isle of Wight U3A started in 1992. We now have have about 420 members. (Charity No. 1048548)
Despite the term 'University' there are no exams or degrees. It simply a desire to learn for its own sake and to share the company of others. Our members are usually people who are retired. We mainly meet in groups and these are very varied, ranging from languages, literature, bridge, dancing, art, history, Pétanque plus many more. The groups are run and organised by members.
We also hold occasional open meetings with a speaker followed by tea and biscuits. Visitors are welcome to come and listen, meet members and enjoy refreshments. Once a year we have an 'Open Day' which is open to all. Group leaders run stalls so that they can share with everyone what goes on within their own groups.
We publish a quarterly newsletter for all our members, sent out by mail and available on this website. In between the quarterly newsletters, there are occasional updates which are emailed to members. These give information about forthcoming general speaker meetings as well as our groups and keep everyone informed. The annual membership fee is £15/£25. This gives access to as many groups as you wish (provided they have places) plus benefits & services from the national head office. Application form is on Contacts page.
