What is the u3a.
The Isle of Skye u3a branch was founded in September 2010 and originally operated in the northern part of the island, with monthly meetings taking place in Portree. The group has grown considerably since those early days and we now have over 60 members living in various places around the island. This presents special challenges but the island itself is a major compensation.
We try to organise social events and group outings right across the island and encourage car sharing for all our activities.
Our members have a wide range of interests; we have a varied and growing number of ‘interest groups’ and are always open to trying new ones. We currently have groups covering topics such as Archaeology and History, Geology, Photography, Nature, Zoom, Bridge, Meditation, Art and three for walking/hiking.
Given the population of Skye, we will never approach the size of metropolitan u3a’s, but we very much hope to continue growing and new members are always extremely welcome.
What is the u3a.
The u3a is a UK wide organisation and is seen as an organisation for people no longer in full-time employment, who therefore have more leisure time.
It aims at providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly and social environment.
Local u3a’s, like ours on Skye, may be viewed as learning co-operatives, drawing upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. It is run by the members for the members.
