Isle of Skye

The Trekkers Walking Group

The Trekkers Walking group is open to all members and aims to arrange at least one event each month in different parts of the island and occasionally on the mainland.

The walks are normally of between 4 and 6 hours’ duration during the summer months and are ranked Easy, Moderate and Strenuous. This is normally determined by the length, duration, terrain and height. For example, the McLeod’s Maidens is considered Moderate / Strenuous, the Marble Line Easy/Moderate and the Lealt Diatomite trail Easy.

In the winter walks are normally limited to about 3 hours so people do not have to travel back in the dark. These walks tend to be predominantly ‘all weather’ walks.

Suggestions for walks are always welcome but full instructions for each walk are sent by email to those wishing to be included on the circulation list as well as being posted on the Skye U3A page on Facebook which is a closed group.

Walks are designed to have a purpose, either to get to a point or walk a circuit and have a designated start and finish point and as such may involve car sharing to either the start or from the end.

Walk instructions will normally give an indication of terrain but it is essential that good footwear (walking shoes/boots) and wet weather clothes are available during the walks. (it does get a bit wet, cold and windy on Skye sometimes!!)

Walks normally give opportunity for observing wildlife, geology and archaeological features, but time for this will be much more limited than on the specific Nature, Geology or Archaeology Groups.
