Programme of General Meetings
General Members' Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from September to May.
All meetings start at 2 pm, apart from 20th February, which starts at 11,15 am, and are in one of three locations - Culloden Baptist Church, Fortrose Free Church and The Spectrum Centre.
4th November 2024 - Culloden Baptist Church
Inverness Castle: Mary Dawn Mohun, Engagement and Communications Officer for Highlife Highland, will give an update on the restoration of the castle and a viewing of the new video, The Inverness Castle Experience.
2nd December 2024 - Fortrose Free Church
The Value of Crofting for Scotland: Gary Campbell, Chief Executive of The Crofting Commission, explains crofting's ability to sustain communities in the crofting counties of Scotland and showcases the sector's resilience, adaptability, and its significant potential for future growth.
6th January 2025 - Culloden Baptist Church
The Lost Railways of the Black Isle: Jack Kernahan, Highland Railway Society, recounts the history of The Black Isle Railway, from Muir of Ord on the main line north from Inverness, to Fortrose on the southern shore of the Black Isle, which served a rural community made prosperous by its good quality land. The line was opened by the Highland Railway in 1894 and served the area for more than half a century.
3rd February 2025 - Fortrose Free Church
Saving Wildcats: Restoring the Highland Tiger in the Cairngorms National Park: Helena Parsons, Saving Wildcats Outreach and Engagement Manager, recounts the work of Saving Wildcats, which aims to prevent the extinction of wildcats in Scotland by breeding and releasing them into the wild.
20th February 2025 at 11.15 am - The Spectrum Centre
How to Make the Most of your Smartphone: Chris Grant, Community Relationship Officer with AbilityNet, explains many of the features and functions of smartphones, including apps which aid communication and accessibility. Refreshments will be available from 10.30am.
3rd March 2025 - Culloden Baptist Church
Mentoring: Abigail Lucas, Programme Manager for MCR North of Scotland, explains MCR Pathways' work in local schools. MCR Pathways is a national, award-winning mentoring programme, aimed at giving all young people equality of education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances.
28th April 2025 - Culloden Baptist Church
Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport: Calum MacPherson Chief Executive, Inverness and Cromarty Green Freeport, returns to give an update on developments with the Freeport. This is a joint meeting with other Highland u3a groups.
19th May 2025 - Fortrose Free Church
The Work of the Mountain Rescue Service: Keith Bryers of Dundonnel Mountain Rescue describes the varied work of the Mountain Rescue Services, which covers the huge area of the North Western Highlands. The mountains are spectacular, but the terrain is extremely hazardous. Mountain ridges are steep and remote - often miles from any type of track and one of the main challenges facing the team are the vast distances involved.
23rd June 2025 - Culloden Baptist Church
Natural Medicine: Kassem Karim from Welbeing Natural Medicine, Inverness, decribes the ancient traditions of Natural Medicine, including Classical and Japanese Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Unani Medicine (Hikmat) and Ayurveda Natural Medicine.
Potential new members may attend one general meeting before joining.
