The Hayling Island Six
The Hayling Island Six Report
On the 19th September 16, the U3A Petanque team, the Hunny Masters, donned their new purple polo shirts and made their way to Hayling Island, for the first nationwide U3A Boules competition. Two teams took part : Hunstanton 1, comprising Roy, Cynthia and myself; Hunstanton 2 led by David joined Scolesy and Lyndsey.
It was a steep learning curve, as we have only ever played against King’s Lynn U3A before; here, there were 155 participants! Having arrived at Mill Rythe Holiday Park, we found it had been used to film “Hi-de-Hi”, a bit dated but adequate. However, it was a bit of a shock to find we were playing on the concrete car park after our usual surface at Searles of thick shingle!
On Saturday, the first full day of play ended with team 2 being in the Gold playoff, and team 1 (much to our surprise) in the Silver finals for Sunday! We played against others in our rating, with a knockout to decide the finalists. Unfortunately, team 2, after playing extremely well thanks to Scolesy – who carried the team for the whole weekend - missed out and joined team 1 watching the finals.
Whilst not winning, we learnt so much and met some very pleasant people, one or two who may well join us for a couple of hours next time they are this way. It seems a fine time was had by all, as the same venue has already been booked for 2017.
Four of us stayed on for the week, and not only saw Rod Stewart, the Beatles, and the Travelling Wilburys, we even watched the Vera Lynn story! Incidentally, we may not have been the best at Petanque but we went on to win medals and certificates in the general knowledge quizzes.
