Wine Tasting Group
On a perfect day in August, dry and not too hot the group met at the New Hall Vineyard in Purleigh, Essex to be greeted by our host Lucy & a welcome drink!
We spent the next two hours on a very informative tour of the vineyard which has its own winery too. The modern day vineyard was established in 1969 & has since grown to be the largest vineyard in East Anglia with over 108 acres of vines producing around 300,000 bottles of fine English wine each year.
We can testify to the wonderful taste of some of these wines on our visit, which was all part of the day, and they are very proud that, since 1976, New Hall has been recognised with over 185 International Wine Awards of which over half of them have been Gold or Silver Medals. Lucy, our host was extremely knowledgeable and it was a great way to appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into making our favourite tipple!! They were just preparing for their annual wine festival, held the first weekend in September (which a few of our group attended & said it was a great day out) followed by harvesting the grapes, an earlier harvest this year than is usual due to the wet & warm summer, so we much appreciated their hospitality at such a busy time.
There is a special Family Festive event to be held at the beginning of December (check their website for details) which should be worth a visit - free tastings on offer! The finale to our visit was the tasting of various wines accompanied by a plentiful spread of cheeses, biscuits etc which was very well appreciated, apart from the fact that we had followed our
vineyard tour with a booking for lunch at the nearby village pub! After being well fed and looked after by the landlady there we all made our way home from a most enjoyable day.
