HULLBRIDGE U3A UKULELE GROUP
The Ukulele Group now meets twice a month, on the first Monday and third Thursday.
The Ukulele Group first performed on stage at the ‘Hullbridge Has Got Talent’ show in November 2014 and had not had any gigs since and so it was a surprise to be asked to perform for the ‘Barling Magna Evergreen Club’ in Great Wakering. It appears that one of our members, Brian Gale, had been at the show and passed on our contact details to the ‘Evergreens’, a club for elderly people of the Gt. Wakering community which meets weekly and has visiting entertainment acts once a month.
So after some initial stage fright issues we obliged and six of us agreed to perform for them on 10th November 2015.
When we arrived we were greeted by the folks there and after they had sung their ‘We are the Evergreens’ song and had a tombola we were treated to tea and home made scones with jam and cream.
Ron, the main organiser had told us that he was very active in selling poppies outside Waitrose for the last few days and told us that he had served in the Korean War where he lost two of his closest friends there in battle. Originally we had told them we didn’t want paying and so when we were offered a fee for our performance we had no hesitation in giving it straight back to him for his poppy appeal.
We played for the best part of an hour and being the day before Armistice Day we had decided to throw in a mix of oldies and wartime sing-along songs. They were very appreciative of our efforts and when somebody was foolish enough to shout ‘More!’ at the end of the act, we duly obliged with an extra one which we had ‘prepared earlier’.
Dave Payton loaned the men some of his fancy waistcoats and we dug in our clothes drawers for our bow ties so at least we looked the part.
I must say it was a delight to meet all of the folk at the club. They made us so welcome and were very generous with their applause.
One lady said to me ‘Do you come out at night?’
I’m not sure what she meant by that but I took it to mean whether we would be available to play Ukulele in the evenings. They also told us they would be asking us back in the spring. Devils for punishment, are these ‘Barling Magna Evergreens’!
Many thanks to the members of the band for all their hard work and endless practice.
Just submit your name through the Group Co-ordinator and you will be welcome to join the next available session.
