We meet on the third Thursday of the month from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm at Golden Court, London Road, Isleworth.
Members suggest the books they wish to read, and that way we discuss a wide range of authors and styles, usually leading to stimulating discussions.
The group is currently full but there is a short waiting list.
The Book Group made its first tentative steps into the world of Zoom on 21 July. We were able to have a live chat about the books we had read since lockdown. It was wonderful to see each other, share news and decide on a group book to read before our next meeting. Our second venture into virtual Book Group Meetings was on 18 August when we discussed our chosen book ‘Bitter’ by Francesca Jakobi. This meeting was a real treat as Francesca, or Chess as she is known, was able to join us.
‘Bitter’ is Chess’s first novel and she was able to talk to us about the inspiration for the book, her grandmother, and how she researched background information in order to capture the atmosphere of London in the 1940’s and 1960’s. Chess also answered our many questions. She also talked about the novel she is currently working on. It is set on Eel Pie Island, a place she is familiar with as she is a resident of Twickenham.
‘Bitter’ is a novel all of us would recommend, several of us described it as an emotional roller coaster. We are looking forward to the publication of her next novel and hope she will visit us again.
The next Zoom Book Group meeting will be on 15 September when we will be discussing ‘At Risk’ By Stella Rimmington
