Houghton-le-Spring

Welcome

The Annual Membership Renewals will be taking place in January, February and March 2024. These will take place in surname alphabetical order - January A to F : February G to O : March P to Z

The schedule is to try and alleviate too many people renewing at the same time. Don’t worry if you can’t attend at the right time, we will accept your renewal but would prefer you to try and come at the allotted time.

Houghton-le-Spring U3A was established in March 2016 as a self-help group of local people who are retired or no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.

U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one's life (the third age) after the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. Anybody in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time. THERE IS NO LOWER AGE FOR MEMBERSHIP.

Members choose to join whichever activity groups interest them, and each group meets informally either weekly, every 2 weeks or monthly.

Every group leader is a volunteer from the membership. Click Group Heading above to see a full list of our activity Groups.

Monthly Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in Houghton Welfare Hall from 2pm until 4pm.

Membership is by an annual subscription of £12.35. Entry to monthly meetings is free of charge.
For 2 members at the same address the annual subscription is £21.35.
Annual fees include a £4.00 membership subscription paid to our National Organisation the Third Age Trust who provide a wide range of services and benefits including liability insurance cover.
The fee also include a charge of £3.35 to receive Third Age Matters magazines, which is optional.

Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits are provided free at the start of every meeting with an opportunity for members to network, chat and find out what is happening in the different groups.

The Chair then opens the meeting with announcements, notices and any other business.

After all formal business is concluded, the meeting continues with a presentation by a guest speaker.

If you are interested in joining Houghton-le-Spring U3A just come along to one of our monthly meetings.

Visitors can attend either 2 U3A Meetings or Group Sessions or a combination of both. To attend any further they must join the U3A.

We are a branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A), a self-help organisation for people who are retired or no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.
