Jazz & Big Band –Introduction

The Horsham Jazz & Big Band Group was founded by our late member, Alan Wright, many years ago. He considered this century-old style of music very nostalgic that recalled past days and memories of better times! Days and occasions, be they Concerts, Pubs, Clubs or Festivals, were when both sexes dressed regularly in smart clothes and sported the latest tidy, fashionable hair styles. The music was both rhythmic, romantic and you could hold conversations! The magnificent Dance Ballrooms were the most popular night outs where you were entertained by your local resident band or the sell-out top National touring all-star Bands. It is ironic that, after the Beatles and The Stones, " Celebrity Come Dancing" with its glamour and excitement now attracts large viewing audiences!!

Members volunteer in advance to present their personal selection of musical recordings, relating to a specific title, theme, composer, or individual musician. Two presentations of approximately 45 minutes each, are performed with a short refreshments interval in between. These musical Play Lists are reported in The U3A Horsham Newsletter and official Website, together with forthcoming Presentations.

The Group is run by its members for its members! Individuals decide their own varied choice of tracks. Their favourite interests are diverse, enabling all to expand their knowledge and enjoyment of this genre.

Our Group continues to function in its original agreed format. We meet at 10.15 for 10.30 a.m start on the first Friday of each month, currently in the Wallace Room at The Tythe Barn, Pondtail Road, North Horsham. Attendees contribute £1.50p to include refreshments. There is ample room for parking.

We welcome any retired U3A Jazz & Big Band enthusiasts to join us, and ENJOY!

Frank Chard, Group Leader.
