Horndean & District

January 2016 - Website Fuchsias and Cake

Members of the Horndean & District U3A met for their first monthly meeting of the year on Friday 8th January 2016 for two Talks by some of our members followed by cakes and cuppas.

Marion Wade our chairperson opened the meeting with her usual updates and welcomed the huge turnout of members and even more new members on such an inclement day.

Andy Forbes our webmaster demonstrated where and how to find information on our website. This was an interesting insight and members asked many questions. u3asites.org.uk/Horndean

This was followed by an interesting talk by husband and wife team, David & Mary Underwood, who are members of the gardening group, about cultivating their beloved fuchsias. They have been involved with local fuchsia groups for many years, are distinguished in this field and have won several medals. They took us from a small snippet of the plant, with clipped leaves and how to propagate, to photos of glorious pots and hanging baskets full of their favourite flower, the fuchsia. Very much enjoyed by the members.

Following this, cakes and cuppas were served and Tony Young provided a picture quiz. Some of the pictures were based on local history and provided much fun and laughter.

To round off the social meeting a raffle was held which provided some much needed funds to help towards the high costs of speakers nowadays.
