July 2014 - AGM and Kodumela Talk

The AGM on 4th July was followed by a presentation entitled, ‘Kodumela; past, present and future projects’ given by Carol Veitch who with her husband Richard has been active in supporting this community in South Africa. Carol gave an update of the activities she has been supporting in this South African village following on from her first visit. This visit included a hand-over of a very useful rotavator for the village community and was the subject of Carol’s talk to our U3A in December 2011.

Under the umbrella of ‘World Vision’ other sustainable community projects have evolved in the villages, raising chickens, pig rearing, irrigation with the associated pipes and trenches, a mill for processing mealie (maize) and brick building. The bricks have helped to construct larger school rooms and simple houses for only-children families, where both parents have died of Aids. Other villages, on seeing the progress made, ask how they can make similar advances, original-village Mentors then pass on the knowledge and know-how with great pride.
