April 2014 - Camberley and Sandhurst

On 30th April many members went on a coach trip to Camberley and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

The coach dropped us in Knoll Road outside the Camberley Theatre which is a local landmark about 100 metres from the Surrey Heath Museum. Several of us visited the very pleasant café in the theatre complex for coffee and a light lunch before visiting the exhibition of Camberley's history in the museum. Other members walked through the passage way opposite the theatre and about 200m away, after crossing the High Street to visit the town centre with its shops and cafés. A few of the more adventurous of us climbed the hill up to the Obelisk at the top of Camberley Park behind the Library adjacent to the theatre.

We got back on to the coach at 1:30pm where we were dropped off earlier for the very short drive to Sandhurst. Our tour which lasted the rest of the afternoon covered all aspects of cadet training and took in most of the historic and 'prestige' rooms of Old College (in one of which we were served refreshments) as well as the Royal Memorial Chapel. The day finished with a coach tour of the extensive grounds, visiting some of the more interesting memorials. I think we all came away with a much greater understanding of what life at Sandhurst entails and the vigourous standards that cadets from all over the world who train there need to meet to pass out as fully-trained professional soldiers.
