THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is NOT a university and offers no awards. It is a secular, non-political international organisation based upon mutual self-help groups, to expand members' own knowledge, skills and interests and those of others, in a friendly, non-academic environment.
U3A is not related to a specific age but to the period in one’s life - the third age - after the second age of full time employment and parental responsibilities. Anyone in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time.
Hitchin U3A is a comparatively small, friendly group of around 200 members, but is growing and new members are always welcome. It has a large catchment area from surrounding villages and nearby towns, including Letchworth, Baldock and Shefford in South Bedfordshire.
The whole group meets twice monthly and there is usually a guest speaker, with interesting talks on a wide variety of subjects. See our Events page for further details of upcoming talks or to print your own pocket-sized programme. There are many support roles needed to make these meetings a success – collectively these are termed the Really Useful Groups (RUGs). We are always looking for new volunteers and it is a great way to get involved – many hands make light work.
We have a few Open Groups in which every member can participate and are a great way to get to meet people informally. Our lunch group and walking group (not-too-strenuous) are always popular.
There are also many Interest Groups run by members. See our Groups page for details and click on the group name to find out more about its activities. As Hitchin U3A has been running for over 30 years many of these groups are well established. But, in the U3A spirit of self-help, if you have an interest you would like to pursue contact the %Groups Coordinator% who will provide full support to promote an idea and find a venue
