THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is NOT a university and offers no awards. It is a secular, non-political international organisation based upon mutual self-help groups, to expand members' own knowledge, skills and interests and those of others, in a friendly, non-academic environment.
U3A is not related to a specific age but to the period in one’s life - the third age - after the second age of full time employment and parental responsibilities. Anyone in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time.
Hitchin U3A is a comparatively small, friendly group of under 200 members, but is growing and new members are always welcome. It has a large catchment area from surrounding villages and nearby towns, including Letchworth, Baldock and Shefford in South Bedfordshire.
The whole group meets twice monthly and there is usually a guest speaker, with interesting talks on a wide variety of subjects. See our Events page for further details of upcoming talks or print your own pocket-sized speakers programme.
There are also over 25 interest groups run by members. These meet typically once a month at various local venues. See our Groups page for more details and check our 'yellow book' at meetings for vacancies or to record your interest. You may wish to set up a new group yourself.
Our lunch group and (not-too-strenuous) walking group are open to every member and are a great way to get to meet people informally.
