These have been a huge success on the Mondays in between the Speaker Meetings on Zoom and a chance to meet up with friends face-to-face. We are in the open air in the Secret Garden at the back but there is cover in case of inclement weather. If you have not joined us before, there is still time. The next coffee mornings is on 6 December from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Here are a few pictures to tempt you.

***** STOP PRESS *****

The Committee has agreed a new policy which sets out how we conduct our website publishing and use of cookies. The full text is available by clicking the Website Policy link in the column on the right.

Whats App Social media is currently buzzing with security alerts relating to Whats App which has, apparently, secretly changed your privacy settings for groups to include ‘everyone’ by default so people you don’t know can add you to a group without your knowing. These people may include scam messages, loan Sharks, etc. I have checked mine & all settings had indeed been changed to 'everyone' instead of 'my contacts'. However, this is not new but happened in 2019. It should have been picked up if you check your settings regularly. If you are like me and have not done this, you can make the change now as follows:
1. Go to WhatsApp: 2. Go into Settings 3. Go to Account 4. Go to Privacy 5. Go to Groups 6. Change from (Everyone) to (My Contacts).

Volunteers As you can see, in many cases, the members of your committee are doubling up on duties. Mary in particular would like support in managing the groups, but we are always looking for support with the Reception, Hospitality, Roadies, website support and the myriad tasks that keep your U3A running.

If you would like to volunteer in any these tasks, even on an ad hoc basis, or are able to provide specialist support to help run YOUR U3A, please let any of the above know.

Group Leaders - Incidents Involving U3A Members

In the unfortunate event that there is an incident involving a U3A member in your group then this MUST be reported. National U3A has devised a standard form to report such incidents. Please use the link to print off a copy of the form, complete and pass to a member of the committee for U3A records.

As part of the total government review of the way charities operate a policy on safeguarding is now required. The committee has documented the policy to be adopted by Hitchin U3A. This Policy and Procedure is written to enable the Hitchin U3A Committee to act appropriately whenever possible or where instances, or allegations of, actual abuse or neglect comes to their attention.

The summary document provides guidance on action U3A members should take if someone discloses instances of abuse to you.

Some groups have expressed concern about the issue of copyright, particularly when it is so easy to download data off the internet. There are many copyright laws relating to, amongst others, books, journals, magazines, maps and newspapers; photographs, digital images, films and videos; recorded music, lyrics, composed music, recorded sound & artwork and sheet music.

Using includes : photocopying, scanning, downloading and public performance e.g. showing a film, singing/playing live music, performing live drama or musicals.

U3A has a number of licences which cover groups for much of the day to day usage of copyrighted material. For detailed information and copies of various documents visit the National u3a website. It is recommended that group leaders who reproduce material take note and ensure they are covered.

Wanderers a-wandering
The wanderers group took advantage of the lovely weather earlier in the year. Margaret led a group of 8 round her estate making good Wanderers group - August 2020 use of the shade under the trees. 6 stayed to have a picnic they had brought, in Margaret's garden, and had a good old chat. All socially distanced. The group seemed impressed.

Lazing on the Beach
Saroj was out and about in Norfolk and spotted these seals on a beach taking advantage of seals 1-2008 the lack of people seals 2-2008 (everyone else seemed to be in Bournemouth). It looks like some of them have taken advantage of the 'eat out to help out' offer and are indifferent to her presence. All except one who thinks this might be an invasion of privacy.
Walking Group - July
Walking group 20-07-1 When lockdown restrictions eased the walking group had its first attempt at a socially distanced walk, in bubbles of no more than six. A route with wide footpaths was chosen, and a shorter than normal walk just to get the limbs moving again. Because of the weather the date of the Walking group 20-07-2 walk was rescheduled at short notice but still ten regular walkers came along so we were able to create two bubbles. It was a lovely morning and everyone agreed it worked out well. More walks will be scheduled in the coming weeks - depending on restrictions.

Walking Group - pre-Covid

Feb 2020 - walking group 1 The Walking group this year has been Feb 2020 - walking group 3 supported by over 20 intrepid explorers in both January and February. It continues to provide fresh air, exercise and enjoyment for the well-being of all.
This second walk of the year was led by Janet and Norman from The Feb 2020 - walking group 2 ----- Millstream to Willian in beautiful sunshine (note the shades). The walk took in water hazards, early flowers and architecture.
All rounded off by lunch at the hostelry.
