Film Group

The Film Group meets on the first Wednesday of every month in Rooms 1 and 2 at the George Ward Centre in Barwell. The meetings start at 14.00 and finish by 16.30.

Janice became the group leader in January 2019. If you want to join us or find out more, just come along to a meeting.You'll be made very welcome!

We watch a variety of films from classics to more recent ones, drama or comedy. We're not film buffs but we enjoy watching a good film together and discussing it afterwards.

2019 Programme

7 Aug
Mr. Holland's Opus starring Richard Dreyfuss, Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas, and Olympia Dukakis. Released in 1995, the film was nominated for 2 Oscars and 1 Golden Globe. Set in the 1960s, it tells the story of a jazz composer who finds fulfillment as a high school music teacher. A feel good film if ever there was one.

4 Sep
Dead Poets Society starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, and a very young Ethan Hawke. Released in 1989, the film won 1 Oscar. Set in a private boys-only school in New England, it's the story of an English teacher who encourages his students to 'carpe diem' with unforeseen and tragic consequences.

2 Oct
The Truman Show starring Jim Carey, Ed Harris, and Laura Linney. Released in 1998, The film was nominated for 3 Oscars.It tells the story of Truman Burbank who thinks he's an ordinary man until one day he discovers he's been starring in a reality TV show since birth.

6 Nov
Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley. Released in 2010 the film tells the story of an FBI agent who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of a murderer who escaped from a secure hospital. A very dark thriller with dizzying twists and turns.

Denial starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson, and Timothy Spall.Released in 2016, this is the true story of historian Professor Deborah Lipstadt who battles to prove the Holocaust actually happened, when David Irving, a Holocaust denier, sues her for libel.
