Canal Art and Culture
Interest Group leader: John Rowe
Meeting information: We meet on the second Friday of each month at 2pm to 4pm.
Meeting venue: Ickenham & Zoom.
The Canal Art and Culture Group began in November 2016 with the aim of encouraging members to follow the traditional “roses and castle” painting used by the early canal boatmen and learn about their way of life.
The format of the two hours is as follows:
During Session 1 (2.00 until 3.00) we paint various items (provided by group members) using traditional canal boat styles and colours.
During Session 2 (3.00 until 4.00) we have a presentation covering various aspects of canal life, history and culture.
Group members are welcome to attend either or both sessions.
In addition to regular meetings, we organise canal and river walks, visits to festivals, museums, restoration projects, etc., throughout the summer months, the timing being dependent on the dates of the events.
This is a link to the Canal History Timeline which shows the period 1760 to 1960 and covers the life of canals in England. This 200 year period of carrying goods on the canals was brought to an end by the bad winter of 1962/3.
