Monthly Notices August

This is a list of notices from the Monthly Meeting which was held online on Monday 10th August 2020.

Chairman's Announcements:

The Chairman welcomed everyone and congratulated all the members for mastering the technology to attend our first Hillingdon Monthly meeting online using Zoom. The Chairman hoped all members were well and managing to get out more now that things are easing.

The Chairman then went on to thank the IT Team for all their work in enabling this event to take place.

The IT feed back is that we had 96 members attend the session and some with 2 people on one device so we estimate at least 120 members attended the meeting. Thank you all for joining the meeting.

The Chairman thanked all group leaders for keeping in touch with their members through various links available via Modern Technology.

The Chairman gave an update re the Group Leaders Tea for this year unfortunately nothing has been arranged for obvious reasons.

The Chairman talked about the current status of what the Government call 'Live Meetings' i.e. groups that meet in large numbers in halls and theatres. There is no official opening date yet from Winston Churchill Hall (WCH) but they are at Stage Three of the Roadmap (see Government Advice). When they can, WCH are planning that meetings will have to include social distance which probably means that only 50% of the capacity will be allowed.

In the meantime Hillingdon U3A are planning to provide online Zoom monthly meetings till December just in case. They are also exploring the possibility of online speakers joining our Zoom meeting to provide a talk to the members.

Other hall updates were that the URC had been open since June but none of the other halls or venues we use were available to us and no information on when this might change. Keep checking our website for updates.

The Chairman then mentioned the Slideshow that members could see as they joined the meeting today. She thanked Eirwen and Tony for all the work they do to produce the monthly slideshows. During this period they have created one a month since April and posted them to YouTube for members to keep in touch with HU3A activities. These are all still available via the link in the emails you would have received.

The Chairman went on to remind members that our website pages are being constantly updated and contain lots of valuable information as well as fun stuff to entertain you. Please keep checking the pages so you get any updates and future plans.

The London Region U3A are offering a series of Summer Talks delivered online via Zoom. These are on various subjects for example the one on Monday evening was about The Art and Architecture of Islamic Spain. If you are interested, the different talks are listed on the Events page of our Website with link to the booking pages.
for collection.

U3A UK have had to cancel all this years National Summer Schools but are running some of the Summer School Courses online via Zoom. If you want to know more have a look at the U3A UK Website

Group Notices:

Alan mentioned that he hoped the rambles will start up again in September but has no date as yet, he will let us know when he has more info.

Tony informed the meeting that the Ukulele group have met every week since April and is still very popular with it's members. In fact the Website Ukulele page continues to get the highest hits of any of the Hillingdon website pages. The group have missed playing in person and although Zoom has filled the gap its not as good. So the group has just started meeting again outside in the open at a local park observing Government advice and social distance rules.

Tony informed the meeting that the Guitar Group has also been meeting every week since April and is also popular with it's members. They also have a lot of hits on their Website page.

U3A Singers:
Marlene informed the meeting that the U3A Singers were also continuing to meet via Zoom and are enjoying keeping in touch. However they are having a break now and will commence next month.

PR and Communication:
Rodney gave us a quick update on the Newsletter and the recently run survey to find out what members felt about the current newsletter. He has had a good response to the questionnaire and thanks all those who had completed it but urges any that have not responded to please do so.

Rodney then mentioned the two Webpages he set up in April. These are his recommended Podcasts and his recommended MOOC courses. The Podcasts are great way to deliver interesting subjects via an audio conversation and can be downloaded to your phone for something to listen to on the move such as a dog walk or your daily exercise. The MOOC are online courses on a range of topics and a chance to improve you knowledge or skills on a specific subject.

Interest Group News:
Freda said that updates were given in the latest Newsletter and had nothing more to add at this meeting.

Jim from the Visits team reminded us that nothing is being planned for this year and they will be looking at possibilities for next year.

Other Announcements

Members were reminded that Hillingdon U3A will be running it's AGM online via Zoom on Monday September 14th.

The Running Order
The Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am and the September monthly meeting will start at 10:15am. There will be a gap in proceedings for members to take a comfort break before the AGM starts at 11:00am.

This is an important event in our calendar as we need the support of our members to comply with AGM rules so we ask that you please join us to ensure a successful session. We do realise that a number of members will have 2 members per device again so we will take this into account.

To support this there will be a 2nd Practice session on Monday 7th September at 10:00am for any members who still want to check the connection and device settings before the AGM meeting.

Our Chairman closed the meeting by thanking members for attending and wishing all our members remain safe and exercise caution as we proceed to the next phase of unlocking the country. Finally, The Chairman and Committee look forward to seeing you all again in September.
