Monthly Notices December
This is a list of notices from the Monthly Meeting at the Winston Churchill Hall on Monday 9th December 2019.
The chairman welcomed the members and also any new members attending for the first time. The Chairman also invited any new members to join Adele for a ‘get to know you coffee’ after the meeting.
The chairman then announced that Val Law, a long serving committee member, would be standing down from the committee this month. Val was given a thank you card and a voucher for all she has done on the committee. Val will still be helping at the Monthly meetings where needed.
Finally, the chairman announced that there would be free tea, coffee, mince pies and biscuits today.
Elizabeth started by telling people about the last minute, theatre preview offer she had been given for tonight i.e. Monday 9th December and that regular members of her concerts had filled the available spaces. Elizabeth went on to inform members that the next Chamber Concert on the 21st January 2020 at Cadogan Hall (featuring Mozart & Sibelius) is now fully booked and a waiting list is in place. If you are interested, Elizabeth encouraged members to put their name on the waiting list as there is more often than not, problems where people have to pull out at the last minute. The next concert is on Wednesday 19th February at Cadogan Hall. More details on this website or contact Elizabeth.
Elizabeth also mentioned the Christmas Celebration Concert at the Guild Hall on Wednesday 11th December. The event features the Bach Choir and the Legion's fabulous Central Band as well as celebrities, carols, champagne and lots of Christmas cheer. All in aid of the Royal British Legion.
Harvey mentioned that the Autumn to Spring concert information is in the latest News Letter and also mentioned the Russian Classics performance on 9th February at a cost £34. Application forms are in the latest Newsletter, page 11 or on the Events page of the website.
The next concert is :-
-Sunday 15th December 2019, Grand Christmas Classics including ADAM O Holy Night, DARKE In the bleak mid-winter, RUTTER The Twelve Days of Christmas, SCHUBERT Ave Maria & BACH Christmas Oratorio(Opening Chorus) Plus Carols for all. Cost is £38.00 for this one.

-Sunday 09 February 2020, Russian Classics including BORODIN Overture, Prince Igor, RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2 & PROKOFIEV Symphony No.5. Cost is £34.00.

The next London Walk will be held on Tuesday 28th January 2020 and is entitled ‘Disastrous London’, meeting at the Barbican Underground Station (Metropolitan line) at 10.45am.
Brian will be in the usual place in the foyer in the interval to take names and cheques - £8 per person and cheques made out to Hillingdon U3A. It is also possible to book and pay on-line following the Link to Online Booking which is also on the Events page of the Hillingdon U3A website.
Elizabeth mentioned the new outings being planned for summer 2020 at Holland Park. Rigoletto on June 17th and The Merry Widow on July 22nd. She is awaiting a price but it's expected to be between £55-£60. Contact Elizabeth if you want to be added to her list of interested members.
Elizabeth reported that the Opera Appreciation Group 2 will have its last meeting this week and have to close this year unless they can get more members and someone to lead. She then gave the members a short talk on why we need group leaders and that it's not as difficult as some might think. She encouraged anyone interested to have a chat to a current group leader to find out more. Contact Elizabeth if you can help save the Opera Appreciation group.
Jill unfortunately could not be at the meeting again and other than to report that the trip to see 'Come From Away' last week went well, there was nothing new to report.
The U3A Singers had a very successful concert last Saturday and there is a photo on the Hillingdon U3A Twitter page as well as the website.
General Group News:
Interest Group of the Month
There was no Interest Group of the month this month. The Theology group will be there in January.
Interest Group News:
Freda mentioned the interest group for quilting hopes to start in January once a venue can be obtained and there is still interest in an Armchair exercise group. The Cryptic Crossword is going well and would like more to join.
The Creative Writing group is also looking for new members. Contact Freda or Adele if you are interested.
PR and Communication:
Rodney mentioned the new logo which has Hillingdon at the top then the U3A logo then the Learn, laugh, live strapline that U3A UK are now using. We will be using this from now on.
Rodney wanted to let members know that Hillingdon U3A now has it's own Twitter account and the Ukulele group became the first Tweet. We are now planning a Facebook page for HU3A.
Rodney also mentioned that he would still like members to take posters and the "Extend Your World with Hillingdon U3A" leaflets and distribute where possible, to their local facilities like libraries, Surgeries and Halls etc.
Rodney also talked about the suggestion box on the table where members can post any suggestions they may have.
In Jim’s absence, the Chairman mentioned that there were 10 places still available for the Museum of London in the Docklands visit. Applicants should contact Maureen McCann or Jim to apply for a place. All other visits are now full with wait lists in place.
Ann reminded members that the renewal process starts in January and that emails and letters with pre-populated forms will be delivered to all members starting 20th January. Ann also mentioned that the membership fees for 2020/2021 which start in on 1st April would be £25 for email newsletters and £34 for paper newsletters delivered by post. There will be more updates in January.
The Chairman ended the announcements by wishing all members a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Peaceful New Year.
