Judy announced that the Digital Photography will not be meeting on Thursday 29th August as they will be having an off-site photoshoot at Rickmansworth Aquadrome. This is open to any member. Contact Judy or John Allen for more details.
The next London Walk takes place on Monday 30th September and is entitled ‘Old Westminster’, meeting at Westminster Underground Station (Jubilee line) at 10.45am. The cost is £8 per person and the walks are open to all U3A members. The team will be in the usual place in the foyer in the interval to take cheques. Alternatively, you can now book and pay on-line, either by following the link on the Hillingdon U3A website, or the link on the email that delivered the August Newsletter.
After mentioning the online booking facility now available for the London Walk, the Chairman asked for a show of hands from members present at the meeting on the interest in using on-line payments. About half of attendees were in agreement.
A few members spoke to the Chairman after the meeting about their concern that no other method of payment would be available but the Chairman assured them that this would not be the case.
The next ramble is on the 22nd August and is a five mile linear walk from Northwick Park Underground Station, finishing at Sudbury Hill Underground Station (Piccadilly Line) via Harrow on the Hill, passing Harrow School. There will be some hills to climb where, weather permitting, you will be rewarded with excellent views and there will be no stiles. The lunch stop will be at The Castle Pub at the top of Harrow on the Hill or for an alternative choice walk down to South Harrow (approximately 6 minutes). Those bringing a packed lunch, could eat it at the top of Harrow on the Hill while admiring the view.
Contact Alan Hooper or see the website for more details.
Jill mentioned that she now had application forms for the Xmas show 'Come From Away' at the Phoenix Theatre on 4th December and some will be at the front of the stage during the coffee break. Full details and an application form is now also available on the website.
Travel Experience Group
Judy Peddie mentioned that the group will have a guest speaker from Viking Cruises at the 15th August meeting at St Giles Hall. They are making this talk open to any U3A member but contact Judy to reserve a place.
General Group News:
Interest Group of the Month
'Interest Group of the Month' is the Antiques and Collectables Group – meet them in the coffee lounge during the break.
Interest Group News:
Freda announced that she still had interest in a Cryptic Crossword group, the new French beginners group (that now has a group leader) and an Italian beginners group. She provided signup sheets on the table for any members who are interested.
Freda also mentioned some other possible groups for the members to think about, perhaps a Beading/Patchwork group or a Recorders (musical instrument) group.
PR and Communication:
Rodney who is now the coordinator for this area, mentioned he would be getting in touch with Hillingdon People with a view for them to do an article on U3A. He also showed the new A4 Poster he will be getting printed and hopes to put this into libraries around the area. He also showed the new “Extend your world with Hillingdon U3A” leaflet which Tim Leman has been getting into the local Libraries. The interest in this means Rodney needed to get a reprint and these were also available for members to collect if they could distribute to friends.
Visits: - particularly Marlborough House
Jim said that Janet had eventually managed to secure a date for the Marlborough House visit, being 10th December. The cost is as in the newsletter, £5:00pp. He also pointed to a pile of special application slips for that visit. As we were not able to provide full information about the visit to all present until today, we will keep the visit open until next Monday (19th). The applications provided today suggest that you can send them to Janet (name and address on the form), but it will also be possible to deliver to Maureen Ferguson as usual and we will action a handover. Neither of these addresses are included here because the website is open to 'the world'.
However, if you had been visiting the website regularly you would have been able to see that we agreed a date with Marlborough House last week, and it was included, along with an application form then. So please keep a regular eye on the website - more below.
Website - Keep up to Date
You will appreciate that we can only maintain written contact with the majority of members on a monthly basis. But since Tony Kemp started to manage the website he has been very active and keeps up with many activities providing updates on a regular basis, sometimes a couple of times a week. For example, if you look at the Events page, you can find information about monthly meetings, visits, etc., and if you look at the Notices page you can find what news people have provided (i.e. this report). Also, if you saw something you wanted to remember from the overhead slides, you can even see that. All within 24 hours of the meeting.
Other things you might find useful are a number of ways you can communicate with us, especially if your contact details change.
But one big area of communication providing information from outside our U3A, which might interest people with our interests is Links. You can find all the venues that we use, and how to get there; whether it will rain(?) ; Our U3A photo archive - we are limited to how much we can include on the website but photos of events going back over 10 years are reachable; Online courses; Theatre/Concert events; Other U3As; Crime Prevention; A number of sites for local organisations; in fact the list is endless (not literally of course!) and continues growing.
Remember, Tony updates whenever he recognises something of interest. So thanks Tony, don't let his work be wasted.
Supporting Other Organisers:
Jim reinforced both Jill and Harvey's message about completing applications correctly. He pointed to page 5 of the newsletter just sent, which lists 'Some Administration Reminders'. It would be good if everybody read these because they all cause extra work for those organising events.
Membership Renewal 2019 - 2020
No announcements this month.
Members still to renew are reminded that they can find all the renewal details on this web site Membership 2019 so check these first if you have any questions.
