Family History
Interest Group leader: Alan Mellors
Meeting information: We meet from 2pm to 4pm on the second Tuesday of each month.
Meeting venue: Hillingdon.
The Hillingdon U3A Family History Group has a friendly, well-supported membership with a wide range of knowledge and experience. The aim of our Group, which is suitable for all levels, is to help each other make progress with family tree research, share successes and beware pitfalls. There is open participation and discussion covering any and all aspects of family history investigation.
The topics we discuss are far reaching and, even if they don’t directly affect a member’s research now, they may do so in the future, Members can ask for help with problems, or take the opportunity to boast about an amazing ancestor, or success with a tricky piece of research. These meetings give members the chance to share with others their own research or to explain what they would like to fins if just starting. We participate in swapping and sharing ideas, sources, suggestions for future research, coupled with those “Eureka” moments when we find that missing information.
We often discuss the aims of our research, and the various computer applications that let us search for ancestors and then also to record that information in our personal database. Not just names and dates, but also professions, religious persuasion, migration over the generations, not to mention family “secrets”!
We occasionally have an outside speaker come and present a topical subject to our members at a meeting which we share with the Hillingdon Family History Society.
