Opera & Dance
The Opera & Dance Group is organised by the South Bucks (Beaconsfield) U3A who have kindly extended an open invitation to neighbouring U3As to attend their monthly meetings. Due to building works at their normal venue meetings for the months of June to August will be hald at St Thomas's Church Hall, Mayflower Way, Holtspur, Beaconsfield HP9 1UF. The 2 hour monthly screenings overcomes the limitations of attending live performances and is a bargain at £2 per head. Close to home, we enjoy films and performances from around the globe and over the decades, as our discs do not fade as the performers may have done. Those who have never contemplated Opera are particularly welcome. (They may become addicted, wholly to their benefit).
We are sorry that we couldn't play the ballet 'Sylvia' for our July meeting. We have now managed to get the disc to play, so will restore 'Sylvia' to the programme for future showing.
Friday 23rd August -
This month we go back to the Venetian Baroque time of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi 'The Red Priest'. He was born in Venice, the capital of the Venetian Republic, and lived from 1648 - 1741 when he died in Vienna.
He was employed at the orphanage 'Ospedale della Pieta' initially as a Roman Catholic priest for 18 months but was then taken on as a music teacher, composer, choir master etc from 1703-1715 and then again from 1723-1740. So he had plenty of time to compose more than just the Four Seasons. In his life time he stated in a letter to a colleague that he had composed over 90 operas. However, of these only 50 can be traced and of those only 20 are complete with the music. So this month we are showing one of those:
Orlando Furioso (The Frenzy of Orlando)
This is the version by San Francisco Opera with Marilyn Horne as Orlando and is sung in Italian with English sub-titles.
Parking in Mayflower Way is reasonably relaxed except in front of the shops. The church hall also has its own car park.
We look forward to seeing you all.
