Henley-on-Thames

Activity Group - Short Walks

Short walks start at 10:30 on the third Wednesday of every month. They are usually circular, about 3 miles long, taking about 2 hours and without too many stiles or hills. All u3a members, especially new ones, are welcome to just turn up. Leaders and walks currently planned for 2024 are:

17 January: Terry Kenyon - 7 group members met by Henley Town Hall steps and, owing to the flooding of the planned walk by the river, in fact took a circular walk in Henley, followed by a stop in a local coffee shop.

21 February: Ros Whittaker - Members had planned to meet by Henley Town Hall steps. Regrettably adverse weather conditions meant that this walk was cancelled.

20 March: Sue Hatcher - regrettably the planned walk through woods and peaceful lanes was no longer viable due to mud and was therefore cancelled.

17 April: Mary Barrett - park near the Nettlebed bus stop for a walk in the Nettlebed area. Maybe, after walking, a coffee and a cheese toastie at the Cheese Shed.

15 May: Mary Hoskins - meet/park by Whitchurch Hill Recreation Ground, RG8 7PW, next to St John’s Church, for a scenic walk.

19 June: Leon Summers leads - meet in Henley for walk along towpath(s) and meadow areas. More details to follow.

17 July: awaiting volunteer leader please

21 August: awaiting volunteer leader please

18 September: Jennifer George leads - meet/ park in Mill Lane free car park, Henley, RG9 4HG; flat walk along the river, over Henley bridge and as far as Remenham. Coffee en route back in town.

Any detail updates will be made on the website and we will also try to email regular walkers with any (unlikely) cancellations by latest 9:00am on the day.

All walkers should register their names at the walk and are also invited to provide their email addresses and emergency phone numbers (not the walker’s) unless already given to the Organiser (via the contact tab on this website, or on a walk register).

Walkers should be prepared to deal with any hazards of the walk; concerning their physical abilities, clothing and equipment. Emails, the Website and the Newsletter might highlight some of these, but most walks involve some road traffic, overhead branches, tree roots and occasional rough terrain.

Walkers do so voluntarily and entirely at their own risk; concerning their health, safety and belongings. The Walk Leaders and Organiser are volunteers providing only guidance/advice and enabling the activity to take place. They are in no way responsible for walkers, who must satisfy themselves that they are fit enough for the activity, seek medical advice if necessary and notify the Leader of any medical issues which might affect themselves or the group.

We are a friendly group and hope that you will enjoy our beautiful countryside, as well as our stimulating company! volunteers to lead walks (others will help) and suggestions for walks are much appreciated. For all enquiries please use the contact tab on this website for the Short Walks Organiser, Roger Shaw. Group photo
