Welcome to Helensburgh & District U3A
Membership of the U3A is open to people from Helensburgh and the surrounding area including Dumbarton and Balloch. There is no age limit, but activities are aimed at retired or semi-retired people who wish to share in educational, recreational and/or creative activities and companionship.
University of the Third Age
The University of the Third Age is not a university in the traditional sense - it is the 'University of Life'. It is a nationwide organisation made up of independent local groups run on a voluntary basis by their members. No qualifications are needed to join and none are awarded. It is all about learning for pleasure and for fun! There is no distinction between the learners and the teachers, and everyone is encouraged to participate. You can find out more about the U3A movement on the Third Age Trust website and more about events for Scottish U3A members on the U3A in Scotland website both of which can be accessed in Links
Like all other U3As, we draw upon the enthusiasm, knowledge, experience and skills of our own members to organise and provide a wide range of interest groups and activities. Our interest groups are set up and run by the members themselves. Any member can start up a group - you do not need to be an 'expert'. More information can be found on the Groups page.
Membership provides access to as many of the interest groups as you wish to join, as long as there are places available, and allows you to attend all the monthly meetings.
The annual membership for Helensburgh & District U3A runs from start-up on 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. The annual subscription is £20 for an individual and £18 for each additional person living at the same address (£10 and £9 after 1st of January). The annual subscription includes a capitation fee of £3.50 to the Third Age Trust, which provides liability insurance cover and support services, and £2.40 for five magazines sent to your address.
The subscription covers all general meetings and membership of any number of groups. Any extra costs for group meetings are met by the group members, so there may be a small extra cost for meetings of a particular group to cover room hire and refreshments etc.
How to join
You can join Helensburgh & District U3A at any of our monthly meetings by requesting a Membership application form from the Membership Secretary or the Chairman. All members are welcome to attend the monthly meetings which are held in Helensburgh Parish Church Halls from 2.00-4.00pm on the first Monday of the month. Visitors can attend two monthly meetings before joining the U3A. We have an interesting talk each month by a visiting speaker as well as news of events and interest groups. Look on the Events page to find the latest details of our monthly meetings. We also have a Membership desk and an Interest Groups desk at the meeting, where you can speak to one of our Committee members if you have any queries or would like to find out more about our U3A.
