28/07/2022 | Hawkwell Village Hall | The Secret Life of A Wood - Talk by Roger Hance. Roger Hance is a multi-award winning photographer, whose main interest is natural history. When we walk through a wood, we do not always see the breadth and diversity of the wildlife that lives there. His talk takes a closer look at some of the birds, mammals, insects, wildflowers, fungi and sometimes unusual subjects that can be found, although not always immediately visible. |
25/08/2022 | Hawkwell Village Hall | Georghi Markov and the Poison Umbrella Murder - Talk by Paul Barwick. Paul Barwick is a retired Police Officer who worked in police Intelligence where his focus became organised Criminal networks and crimes of violence, and then in a national role in Counter Terrorism Command SO15. He now owns an espionage themed walking tour company in London. We are going to hear about the extraordinary tale of Bulgarian Journalist Georghi Markov who was assassinated on Waterloo Bridge in 1978 during the Cold War. He was killed by a microscopic pellet containing the deadly toxin Ricin, fired from a modified umbrella supplied by the KGB. We recall the tragic events that shocked the world over 44 years ago and look at the poison Ricin and examine the evidence against the main suspect for the assassination. |
22/09/2022 | Hawkwell Village Hall | Crime and Punishment in 18th & 19th century Essex - Talk by Jane Pearson. Jane Pearson is an Essex University historian who has researched many records of life in the Victorian era, focusing on the lives of ordinary people. In this fun talk she deconstructs what was going on when a group of travellers worked the crowd one evening in Epping in 1791.
