28/03/24Hawkwell Village HallTalk by Andy Malcolm The History of Fish and Chips/Fishermen 's Mission work. More than 13,000 people work in the fishing industry: the UK’s toughest and most dangerous peacetime occupation. At sea, an average of 15 fishermen are killed or seriously injured every year, on land many struggle with insecurity and debt. For the 50,000 retired fishermen and their families, the fishing may have ended but the hardship continues as they face debt, scant savings, loneliness and isolation. Andy will tell us about the history of fish and chips and about the men who catch the fish, stories of fishermen who have lost their lives and how the Mission helps the families. There may be a quick fishy quiz and hopefully he will sing a few sea shanties as well!

Thursday 25/07/2024Hawkwell Village HallTalk by Paul Barwick The Life and Times of Double Agent Zigzag. A return visit from PAUL BARWICK, this time talking about double agent Eddie Chapmen who hated authority as far back as he could remember. He was always in trouble and took the unfortunate step of being imprisoned for a burglary in Jersey just before the German forces invaded in 1940. Rather than spend the whole war in prison he offered the Third Reich his services as a German Agent. Trained in spy-craft and sabotage, he was sent back to Britain on a deadly mission. However Eddie had other ideas, he turned himself in to Mi5 and at a stroke became a double agent for the British working to help defeat the Nazis. His incredible true story is an amazing episode in British espionage history.
Thursday 22/08/2024Hawkwell Village Hall Talk by Lindsay Whitehouse Prison Line of Duty. If you like the Police drama "Line of Duty, then this talk is the prison equivalent. Lindsay Whitehouse worked for the Probation Service in Cumbria, served as a Prison Governor at a number of different prisons and was the first Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex. He has provided commentary and analysis on a number of BBC programmes, TV and radio and has written a number of articles aimed at criminal justice professionals involved in the Youth Justice system. In his talk, he delves into the hidden world of people who work in prison and who do the many tasks that you would normally associate with a Police Detective. He takes us on a journey involving drugs in a prison, with all the consequential issues involved in that and asks us to join him in an attempt to thwart the bad guys.
Thursday 26/09/2024Hawkwell Village Hall Talk by Richard Pusey Medical History on the Doorstep (local Essex Medical History). This talk by Richard Pusey is not for the faint-hearted! It describes the devastation smallpox had on the population of Georgian England and outlines how Daniel Sutton developed inoculation at Ingatestone. It goes on to talk about leprosy and local leper colonies including the very last in the UK at Bicknacre which continued into the 21st century. The obstetric forceps were developed by Essex men whose house is still standing and further by a famous Chelmsford doctor who was the first to develop laryngeal intubation. Why were bladder stones common in the 17th and 18th centuries? The talk will tell you why and describes how they were removed along with lots of other interesting local medical stories.
Thursday 24/10/2024Hawkwell Village Hall Talk by Eve Regelous It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Eve gives a light-hearted talk on the best and worst things about Christmas, a subject you either love or dread. As the sound of Christmas music enters our shops and endless lists of things to do and buy pop into our heads, it's time to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. Or perhaps on how much it costs. With music, glitter, a cracker-joke or two, plus a little about the traditions of Christmas, this talk will stir up memories of times past and get everyone in the Christmas spirit!
