Philosophy

The Philosophy Group sometimes meets in 'The Wheelwright Arms' on Emsworth Rd., the 'Spring Arts Centre' or sometimes at a member's home. We have a history of roving!

Generally we meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month .
Our next scheduled meeting is Tuesday March 5th at 2.30pm in the Spring Art Centre .
If you are interested in joining us then do contact the convener listed below
The next meeting will focus on the topic of :

The Monarchy of Fear - by Martha Nussbaum

This month we are looking at this book. The emotion of fear is analyzed in relation to politics
We attempt to have rotating leadership each month, without putting anyone under obligation. This could be done in any way that suited the person or question/issue being pursued e.g. recommended reading, primer notes, suggested questions for the meeting, recommended YouTube videos or podcasts to get us thinking. Or a mix of any of these. Then as usual we would share interesting relevant material.
Some agreed suggested Topics for 2023-24 are below. They are only suggestions and will need someone to lead them if they are to be used. That said, if someone comes to meetings at the start of the year with other ideas we will be keen to look at these for inclusion in our list as well

  • The Golden Age of Islam - some significant Islamic philosophers ( I would think this will take several meetings if we are to do it any justice)
  • Apophenia

  • Aging - Ruminations on it. Using 'Somewhere Towards the End' by Diana Athill
  • Assisted Suicide- Canada after allowing ‘assisted suicide/dying’ for terminally ill people extended it to those with serious and chronic physical conditions, even if not life threatening. Now it has been extended again to include those with mental illness.

a. Does this change in what we understand to be human ?
b. What philosophical change has underpinned the acceptance of this law and its extension?
c. What are the pluses and minuses in terms of human flourishing?

  • Karl Popper - looking at either his contribution to political theory from: ' The Open Society and Its Enemies' or his contribution to the scientific method
  • When Is violence ever a solution to international disagreements?

We are all amateurs who are interested in asking some fundamental questions.

All are welcome to join us. We have no experts and we are just explorers in what is new territory for us all.
