Geology and Landscape
Convenor: David Carter, canddcarter@ btinternet.com or 023 9248 6534
Venue: tbc (see below)
The focus of this interest group is to gain an understanding of the geology and physical landscape of the area of south-central England within an approximate 30 mile radius of Havant.
It is organised as a one year sequence of monthly meetings discussing, firstly, basic geological topics (such as major rock types and structures, plate tectonics and geological maps.) This is followed by how they relate to areas familiar to the group. Special attention is given to chalk downs, the varied coastal environment and the principal valleys and how they have evolved during more recent geological time. This considers the impacts and legacies of the "ice age" and changing levels of land and sea. Finally, the management of present day geological processes creating problems such as coastal erosion, flooding and landslips are discussed and illustrated.
The next group will start in September 2022. If it does not exceed seven members meetings will be in the convenor's home in Havant. If more than that a venue will need to be hired involving a small cost. The timing of the meetings will be decided according to member's availability. During the year there will be additional meetings at interesting geological sites in the region.
