This group is for film ENTHUSIASTS who enjoy meeting to share our love of film and all things cinematic and to join in the discussion about all aspects of the film afterwards. You don’t have to know anything about film but it’s a place where we all find out about things which other people know, notice, highlight. Please don’t ask to join if you’re just waiting for a film you fancy to come along! Make sure you are able to stay for the after-film feedback discussions as this is part and parcel of the enjoyment and learning which we do as a group. We have grown from around 6 members to 25+ and towards the end of the season we all have input into which films we may be watching the following year. Films, directors, themes, etc. are loosely tailored to requests or I choose a run of things to show. We also have a system of invitation/rsvp which will be used occasionally for specifically group-orientated films or special films.
In the past the group has watched a series of films by one director at a time to get a feel for their genre, choice of performers, style and technique These have included directors chosen by the group such as Jane Campion, Roman Polanski, Nikita Mikhalkov, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky and the Coen Brothers. Themes have included films which are crime thrillers over several decades and political films about factual events. We are about to look at Matteo Garrone as a director and Gary Oldman as an actor. There is possibly some interesting work to explore by Directors of Photography on the horizon and hopefully a look at some famous long and tracking shots in various films. Any further suggestions are always welcome.
We have also watched oscar-nominated films, including the best Foreign Language film, A Fantastic Woman and there is extending scope for 3D and 4K films. I have recently introduced SWWURRF films, which means a film has one or more of these attributes: Strange;Weird;Wonderful;Unusual;Ridiculous;Rare or Fantastical.
With the addition of Apple TV 4K, the choice of films has expanded, with the growing number of 4K films from Amazon Prime as well as films from Netflix and The British Film Institute. Subtitles, wherever available, can be enabled upon request. PLEASE READ THE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE RIGHT.
