Deutsch Unterhaltung

Alles Gute
Christine Wood

The German Conversation group currently has 12 members. The aim of the group is to keep German alive in Haslemere. The town has a flourishing annual twinning arrangement with the beautiful town of Horb am Neckar and some members of the Conversation Group are also members of the Twinning Association. The things that bind us together are an interest in Germany, its language, history and culture, often based on a close familiarity with the country and its people.

There is a range of abilities in the group, but those of us who are less good are nurtured and encouraged by the better ones. No one is 'out of sight', either by too small or too large a level of understanding.

The name of the group is self-explanatory: we talk. For that reason there is no formal tuition in German grammar and those who want to acquire more grammar do so on their own. . We also have reference books containing points of grammar and vocabulary, and these are used in the group as and when needed.

The normal format of the fortnightly sessions is that we talk about events which have occurred in our own lives as well as local and global events. Sonetimes we simply chose a topic and everyone prepares a contribution for discussion. Contributions might last just 2 minutes or extend to 10, but are designed to prompt conversation as all will approach the topic differently. As a member of the group commented," It's remarkable how widely from the original topic the follow-up can stray" We have recently started to include the reading and discussion of a chosen novel as part of our regular sessions which can really help with pronunciation and certainly adds to the "Wortschatz"

We aim to have fun as we learn German and new ideas are always welcome
