Singing Folk
Singing is very therapeutic and leaves you feeling good.
But why Folk Songs? There is a wide variety from the simple rhythmic sea shanties to beautiful love songs that are easy to pick up. Many of which have a fascinating history to them. Our songs range from traditional (e.g. Scarborough Fair, Wild Rover, South Australia) to modern (e.g. Streets of London, Dirty Old Town, Mull of Kintyre). The atmosphere is very informal, relaxed and great fun. We do not sing solo or in public and so singing ability is irrelevant – there are no cameras!
Our Musical Leader is Tom Richardson (of Harrogate Folk Club fame) who leads us with guitar accompaniment in a ‘Singalong’ format with enthusiasm and extensive knowledge. We have several ‘specials’ celebrating St Andrews Day, Yorkshire Day and of course Christmas as well as other themed sessions.
We meet every Monday afternoon in the Brostoff Hall on the first floor of St Peters Church in the town centre on the corner of Cambridge Rd. Each session starts at 2pm and finishes around 3:45pm with a break when a drink of water is available. There is currently a charge of £15 (2022) each term to pay for hire of the hall, printing, etc. plus an initial one-off charge of £5 for our songbook which includes more than 150 songs.
