HARLOW "The Sculpture Town"
Harlow and the surrounding area is a great place to live with many sports, cultural and entertainment amenities to enjoy. The Town Park is nationally recognized and very popular with its "Pets Corner". There are beautiful walks by the River Stort, through wooded areas and on over 30 miles of paved trails that also accommodate cyclists. Trains, buses and the M11 provide good access to London and all it has to offer, as well as the adjoining counties. U3A members make great use of the facilities the town has to offer. Check the Harlow Council link for more information about what is going on that would interest you. The Pram Town link offers an interesting perspective on the town.

The U3A is an international self-help learning organisation for the active retired. In the UK, the national umbrella organization is constituted as a charity. The local organization in Harlow is an independent, unincorporated charity that functions for the benefit of the members. Members are normally retired or semi-retired from paid employment and wish to use their skills and experience, passing it on to others, or trying some new hobbies and activities themselves. Everyone who is on the committee, runs one of the groups or helps at monthly meetings is a volunteer. Getting involved is a great way to make new friends, be socially active, to know what is happening within the U3A and engage with the wider community.

Find more about the history and ethos of the U3A on the National Website link.

Harlow and Surrounding Areas U3A was formed in January 2008. We have about 900 paid up members and 75 interest groups. (Check the Groups page for a flavour of the variety of interests/activities.) The member-run groups are at the heart of the U3A and every encouragement is given to serve more interests and start new groups. Details of current groups are published in the Newsletter, including information on vacancies, meeting places and times. Interest group members manage their own arrangements and expenses, subject to general guidelines and rules on cash handling.

There is a monthly general meeting, usually the 4th Monday of the month, at Paringdon Sports Club, Paringdon Road, Great Parndon, Harlow, CM19 4QT from 10.00 to 12.30am. The meeting is a place where Group Facilitators can meet prospective group members and everyone can find out about organized events, trips and activities and sign up for them. There is usually a speaker on a topic of interest or concern (to those of a certain age) and many opportunities to socialize over a "cuppa".
