Hiking

Group Co-ordinator: Alison Crawford

Description of Group: A walking group for those who want to walk a little further (Sorry, no dogs)- walks will be about 5 to 6 miles and will be walked at a fairly brisk pace - after all, we do want to return to a local pub in time for lunch! There may be stiles and some muddy patches to negotiate! We meet on the 4th Friday of the month at 10.00am.

We have also had a 2 night stay in Norfolk with walks in the area which was very successful and so we plan to make such visits an annual event. In April 2018 we went for a 3 night stay at an HF Country house in Malhamdale and in April 2019 we will be going to Abingworth for guided walking with HF.

Other developments for 2019 are map-reading sessions to help us develop and improve our skills and we are going to walk the Essex Way (in stages) as well as some summer evening walks. We have an active and busy year ahead of us!

JANUARY - we started January with an additional walk in Suffolk, starting from Minsmere nature reserve where the walk also ended - hoping to see a starling murmuration before returning home. Well, the best laid plans - no murmuration but the walk was interesting and enjoyable.

Our main walk for the month was Great Tey. The day was not very promising, being dull and dreary. However, at least it didn't rain and wasn't as cold as expected. We felt as if we got an extra workout as the Essex mud clung to our boots as we went. But still we had good walk, and we were pleased to welcome new members to our group.

FEBRUARY - COLNE ENGAINE -

MARCH - PEBMARSH

APRIL - no walk in Essex as we had our group holiday to the South Downs

JUNE - BARDFIELD - GR FINCHINGFIELD led by Mike

JULY - Essex Way 4th leg - Chatham Green to WHITE NOTLEY (10.8 miles)
JULY - evening walk - WALTON ON THE NAZE led by Alison
JULY - ALRESFORD - led by Dorothy. On a very hot day we headed out to Alresford for our walk - thankfully a lot of the walk was through woodland and also on the sea wall, so we got some relief from the heat. A very good walk

AUGUST - 5th leg of The Essex Way - White Notley to COGGESHALL - led by Dave - the forecast was not great but we headed off to continue our trek across Essex. The good news was that the weather was so much better than forecast, the bad news was that the pathway was quite overgrown with brambles as we neared Coggeshall. However we made it through and were rewarded by a sign that said that we had made the half way mark. This leg was shorter than the last, which gave us time to stop & hug a tree, have a quick look at Grange Barn in Coggeshall and have an end of walk drink at the pub.
AUGUST - evening walk -ABBERTON RESERVOIR led by Alison. Our last evening walk of the year and despite poor weather during the day we managed a dry walk and even a bit of a sunset
AUGUST - STOKE BY NAYLAND led by Alison

SEPTEMBER - 6th leg The Essex Way - Coggeshall to Ford Street
SEPTEMBER - SIBLE HEDINGHAM - Wendy led us on a delightful walk from Sible and even arranged for fine weather in a rather unsettled week!
