Hiking

Group Co-ordinator: Alison Crawford

Description of Group: A walking group for those who want to walk a little further (Sorry, no dogs)- walks will be about 5 to 6 miles and will be walked at a fairly brisk pace - after all, we do want to return to a local pub in time for lunch! There may be stiles and some muddy patches to negotiate! We meet on the last Friday of the month at 10.00am.

In addition to our regular monthly walk, in 2019 we took up the challenge to walk the Essex Way, completing one leg a month. These walks are longer than our regular walks so this calls for a picnic lunch. We completed the walk in February 2020 (although some of us have a little catching up to do having been forced to miss the odd leg or two). We had plans to walk The Saffron Way but these were thwarted by Covid 19.

We have short walking breaks to different parts of the country, when we use HF Walking Holidays, taking part in their guided walking activities which give our members the chance to walk at 3 different levels. In April 2018 we went for a 3 night stay at an HF Country house in Malhamdale and in April 2019 we went to Abingworth on the South Downs. We finished the year with another break to Bourton-on-the-Water. Our break to The Brecon Beacons in 2020 and then 2021 had to be cancelled and now we are looking forward to Church Stretton in 2022!.

Another development for 2019 was map-reading sessions to help us develop and improve our skills. These sessions were well received (and have led to some new leaders for our regular walks).

2021 began in lockdown so activities were restricted to our own local walks. However we maintained contact with each other through an open email system where we shared photos and stories from our walks. We also started Scavenger hunts where we searched for items to share with the group via photos. We were pleased once restrictions were relaxed to be able to meet for walks, within guidelines. Our monthly regular walk was restarted with different members offering to lead walks, Dave started a monthly longer walk which includes a picnic and Alison re-started monthly evening walks for the summer period. There are now plans afoot to hold a breakfast walk - early start followed by a cooked breakfast. So, the Hiking group continues and is flourishing.
