Theatre and Plays
Group Co-ordinator: Malcolm Swainsbury
Meet at the Co-ordinator's home at 2pm on 2nd Thursday in each month.
At the centre of our activities is the love of watching live plays. We have discussed live performances such as the National Theatre's "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" which we saw at Braintree's Cineworld. Recently we have been to the Mercury Theatre to see a performance of a new musical called "Pieces Of String" which was preceded by a very interesting question and answer session with the writer. Seeing how directors transform a script into a live performance is fascinating and forms an important aspect of our activities.
Most recently we have read the outrageous farce "What The Butler Saw" by Joe Orton and watched the dvd. This play certainly divided the group; some loved it others disliked intensely.
The group is evolving and following discussions about future activities we have decided to vary our activities by reading some scripts aloud in our sessions, discuss casting, staging and costume. We will begin with Sue Townsend's "Bazaar and Rummage".
Whatever we do though, essentially it is about sharing in lively conversation our enthusiasm for theatre and plays.
Meetings take place at the leader's home.
