ComTech2: Physical Computing
CommTech2: Physical Computing
WHEN 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2pm. During the Covid19 emergency we have been meeting using videoconferencing by mutual agreement.
WHERE (The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth).
AIMS To create our own technologies for the benefit of the community, especially older people such as ourselves. The components exist to do this, they are inexpensive and easy to configure and program.
The core interest of the ComTech2 Group is working with ‘microcontrollers’ – tiny, inexpensive computers. You may remember our first big project was to build an automatic plant watering system for Halesworth in Bloom. Since then we have taken on a number of further challenges. The area we are working in is known in the world of IT as ‘physical computing’. The original microcomputer we used – the ‘Arduino’ – was designed specifically for non-technical people, specifically artists and designers. We still use this but have moved on. There are a number of more recent alternatives. The newest Arduinos are capable of much more – in particular they can connect to the internet. This raises interesting possibilities.
A recent project required us to be able to program in an unfamiliar programming language, ‘Processing’. This is older than the Arduino but it also was originally aimed at artists and designers. Although it can be used for much else, the introductory learning materials we have found on the internet are clearly aimed at the visual arts. This is taking all of us in the group into new areas so don’t worry if you feel you would need a great deal of prior knowledge, we are all in the same boat. You would be very welcome to join us.
CHARGES £2 per month to cover room fees.
New members very welcome
