WELCOME

Welcome to the Hale & District u3a. We now have over 800 members and more than 90 subject groups up and running, covering everything from Scrabble to Current Affairs. If you want to keep an active mind, there should be something here to interest you.

WHAT IS u3a?

u3a (the University of the Third Age) is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local u3as' all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Local u3as' are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. The word “university” is used in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue learning in all its forms.

The u3a approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. u3as' offer learning activities which reflect members’ wishes and which aim to satisfy the widest possible range of interests: educational, cultural, recreational, physical and social.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

u3as are funded in the main by the subscriptions of their members. It costs £15.00 to join Hale u3a. This is a £10.00 annual membership fee and a £5.00 joining fee. In subsequent years only the annual membership fee is required.

In addition, there is sometimes a small contribution towards the costs of group meetings, especially if rooms have to be hired – but these are decided by the members of the groups.

Gift Aid: Are you a UK tax payer? If so, you can authorise Hale & District u3a to claim from the tax man an additional 25p for every pound of your annual subscription. Currently that raises an additional £2.50 on every Gift Aided membership and helps us to keep down costs to our members. So please taken the time to complete this section of the Membership Form before you return it to us.

HOW OFTEN & WHERE DO WE MEET?

There is a monthly open meeting where members come together to share the experiences of their groups, find out about events and activities and listen to a presentation on a topic of general interest. Due to the current Covid-19 situation, this is now taking place over the internet.

When we can meet again then we meet at 2:00pm on the first Thursday of each month at the Bowdon Rooms (home of The Cinnamon Club) in The Firs, Bowdon, Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 2TQ. There is a £1 admission charge for these Monthly Meetings, to cover room hire costs. For further information about future Monthly Meetings, other events and activities please click on the Events button at the top of this page.

In "normal" times, the subject groups normally meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly, as agreed by their members. The indoor groups typically meet either at members’ homes or at hired venues. Many groups have switched to online communication over the pandemic (esp. Zoom). There is more information about Groups and Social Events from the Groups tab at the top of the page.
