Welcome to the Hale & District U3A. We now have nearly 800 members and 60 subject groups up and running, covering everything from Scrabble to Current Affairs. If you want to keep an active mind, there should be something here to interest you.
WHAT IS U3A?
U3A (the University of the Third Age) is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Local U3As are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. The word “university” is used in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue learning in all its forms.
The U3A approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. U3As offer learning activities which reflect members’ wishes and which aim to satisfy the widest possible range of interests: educational, cultural, recreational, physical and social.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
U3As are funded in the main by the subscriptions of their members. The current annual subscription is £15 and membership runs from April 1st to March 31st. As we announced at the AGM in May 2016, we have had to increase the membership fee to £15 from January 2017 onwards, due primarily to the increased cost of room hire for the Monthly Meetings. For further information please click on the link at the top RH of this page entitled: “The Beacon IT System and Membership”.
In addition, there is sometimes a small contribution towards the costs of meetings, especially if rooms have to be hired – but these are decided by the members of the groups.
Gift Aid: Are you a UK tax payer? If so, you can authorise Hale & District U3A to claim from the tax man an additional 25p for every pound of your annual subscription. Currently that raises an additional £2.50 on every Gift Aided membership and helps us to keep down costs to our members.
Gift Aid Declaration forms can be picked up at our Monthly Meetings or you can print off a digital version by clicking on the link at the top right-hand side of this page labelled: “Gift Aid Form” or you can obtain a form by emailing Rosie Barker at: email@example.com.
HOW OFTEN & WHERE DO WE MEET?
There is a monthly public meeting where members come together to share the experiences of their groups, find out about events and activities and listen to a presentation on a topic of general interest. These meetings are held at 2:00pm on the first Thursday of each month at the Bowdon Rooms (home of The Cinnamon Club) in The Firs, Bowdon, Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 2TQ. There is a £1 admission charge for these Monthly Meetings, to cover room hire costs. For further information about future Monthly Meetings, other events and activities please click on the Events button at the top of this page.
The subject groups may meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly, as agreed by their members, either at members’ homes or at hired venues – details can be found on the Groups page of the website. Further information can be seen about groups and social events via the link at the top RH of this page: “Information on Groups and Social Events”.
