Book Club (3)
Group Leader : Lynne Middleton
We are a small, friendly group who meet at my home in Daws Heath. We focus on 'meaty' literary fiction, with some established classics and the occasional lighter novel thrown in for good measure. These are usually titles suggested by the members, or gleaned from those listed by other U3A reading groups. Not every book will be to everyone's taste, but I think we find value in reading titles we might never have chosen and encountering authors we are not familiar with. We source as many books as possible from the Library Service, though in order to achieve variety, we sometimes acquire our own copies, which can often be purchased cheaply secondhand.
The meeting usually starts informally, talking through our general impressions of the month's choice, going on to a biography of the writer. We progress to discussion of reviews and the book group questions to be found online. This can be challenging, but is certainly thought provoking and certainly keeps our brains in full working order! It is not unusual for us to go off at a tangent, as a book sparks our individual responses.I think we all find it fascinating to share others' ideas, which can lead us to view a book in a new light, appreciating it more than we might do when reading independently.
The group is currently full, but please enquire if you are interested. I do maintain a waiting list.
