Welcome to the happy chaos of the GU3A guitar group.
We meet once a fortnight, for a session of learning, playing and laughing about all aspects of the guitar, and have been known to drink copious quantities of tea and coffee (but no whisky or gin up to now). The primary aim is to have fun though we do cherish the idea of gaining some skills and competence too.
We play guitar music from a variety of genres depending on what interests the people in the room! For example...
|Recently we have been trying out pieces by Fernando Sor , Here is a nice example, played rather faster than we do(!) by David Jaggs Op 35 No 17 (Segovia study No 6)|
|.. and we may one day aspire to: Recuerdos de la Alhambra played by Ana Vidovic|
All sorts of variety but here’s a couple of examples:
|Dougie MacLean – Caledonia||The Dark Isle – a nice fingerpicking version by Tam Stevenson|
NB we don’t just play Celtic folk, and singing is not forbidden!
We haven’t done so much of this recently, but in the past we have visited old favourites such as Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven ... as well as the Beatles, the Kinks… and even Mary Poppins…
Currently we are pondering a plan to put together our own song book, and wondering if there may be scope for another GU3A guitar group more dedicated to happily bashing through the chords of some favourite songs, while this group perseveres with improving technique. :-)
