What is our U3A?
Our U3A is one of over 1000 U3A groups in the country spread through our cities, towns and villages and is designed for retired or semi-retired people to provide an opportunity to learn or develop new pastimes, skills, interests and sports, whilst providing the opportunity for socialising with other people with similar interests. Like all U3A groups, we are self-financing and run entirely by the members. Gravesend and Northfleet U3A is a Registered Charity, Number 1180160.
We were formed in 2003 by a group of seven friends with the first monthly meeting taking place in May 2004. Membership grew slowly during the first few years but by 2007 we had 50 members and we had outgrown our first meeting place and so moved to a larger venue. During these early years of our formation a monthly Newsletter was established as a single sheet publication. By 2011 membership numbers reached 100 and it became necessary to move again to our current larger venue, Chalk Parish Hall. Since then our membership has dramatically increased to over 300, with the Newsletter now a 16 page full colour booklet. An enthusiastic committee leads our U3A which is dedicated to providing members with a friendly and varied programme of activities throughout the year.
What Do We Offer?
Our members have formed a wide range of interest groups - currently 40 of them - each of which is led by a member of the group. Group meetings are normally held in the home of one of the group members, where appropriate, and on a monthly basis. We encourage all members to join interest groups that attract them and to form new interest groups or duplicate groups when one becomes full. Details of all groups currently available can be found on this website.
We have a general meeting each month in a local hall at which everyone is entitled to attend and during which we have a talk given by a speaker. The talks cover a wide range of themes of general interest and are well attended. It is here that we meet old friends and make new ones in an informal, relaxed atmosphere over tea or coffee and a biscuit. It is friendly and convivial and, for many people, it is the focal point of the monthly calendar.
Additionally we organise an annual holiday as well as a varied programme of day trips and theatre visits.
Keeping You Informed
Each month we produce a newsletter which is sent to all members by e-mail and, for those without e-mail, by post. It gives full details of the group meetings and other activities taking place over the following month as well as news about the group activities and trips that have taken place during the preceding month. It also contains all relevant contact details.
Where Do We Meet?
Our regular monthly meetings are held from 2pm - 4pm on the 2nd Friday of each month at
City Praise Centre (CPC),
9-11 Lower Higham Road,
Gravesend, DA12 2LY. (opposite the Shell Filling Station)
Some parking is available in their car park in Dering Way and some more in their car park in Lower Higham Road. Bus routes 480, 481, 490 and 190 all stop nearby.
How Much Does it Cost?
Our annual subscription from January 2019 is £12.50. This doesn’t include the cost of day trips and holidays, of course!
It is necessary to be a fully paid-up member of our U3A to join an interest group.
