Latin with Laughter
This group meets on alternate Thursdays mornings of each month in a private residence.
A light hearted eclectic approach to looking at Latin of all periods and types from the GallicWars of Julius Caesar, Bede’s histories, the Summa Theologica of Thomas Acquinas and Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit nicely rendered in Latin! The essence of the group is to get a feel for Latin and how it works i.e understanding the grammar and construction of the language but with no requirement to learn by rote! Alongside the Latin, there is the historic context and culture of the people using it be it roman or ecclesiastical.
Not long after joining U3A, I responded to a suggestion that there might be some interest in the setting up of a Latin group and ended up as a Group Leader. I rapidly realized that what I had said I would do was, to use the Latin phrase, ‘facile dictum, difficile factu’ –‘easy to say, difficult to do’! It was very evident to me that it would not be possible to teach the language based on an hour and a half session every month and we agreed at the first meeting of the group the aim would be to give a feel for the language coupled with looking at Roman history and its lasting impact. We have, ‘mirabile dictu’ ‘remarkable to relate’, now completed no less than 38 sessions. It has been a really eclectic selection of bits and pieces ranging from looking at Latin heraldic mottos, legal phrases, numerals and the Roman system for dates and telling the time. We have looked at extracts from the works of Julius Caesar, Horace and Livy to mention but a few. We have looked at ecclesiastical Latin, including Christmas carols and some Old Testament extracts. We have even read Peter Rabbit in Latin and extracts from Winnie the Pooh. The last session comprised an examination of the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, together with a look at the account of Pliny the Younger. Yes, we do look at the grammar and the way the language works but above all the sessions are intended to be fun, and light hearted as well as informative. I hope it is all of that – at least the group members keep coming back for more!
