Members of The Optimistic Readers have enjoyed social events as a result of reading some of the books. Reading Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggagh resulted in a visit to Amsterdam and, as many films have been based on books, this creates an opportunity to go to the cinema or hire a DVD to watch as a group.
- THE PINECONE: the story of SARAH LOSH by Jenny Uglow
Sometimes we read a book which triggers a wish to see the area in which that book is set, or to find out more about the subject. Jenny Uglow's book did just this (see link to the right for a summary of the story). Last year some members of U3A reading groups had a day out. We went to the Upfront Gallery near Hutton in the Forest for coffee (and cake) first then went on to Wreay. We had a guided introduction to Sarah and her church and were also given the opportunity to go into the mausoleum to see the sculpture of Katherine. We then had lunch in village pub. It proved to be an excellent day out.
