Science and Technology Forum
When face to face meetings resume (post-Covid), they will be held in the Croftlands Community Centre at 2pm on the first Thursday of each month and there will be a charge for each meeting. The Croftlands centre has a large room and there is ample parking to the rear of the building at Central Drive, Ulverston LA12 9JN.
There is no formal membership of the Science and Technology Group and any U3A member is free to attend any session. There is an email distribution list and if you wish to receive information on topics (but have not had an email from us before), please send your details and email address to Andy Renwick.
Our last presentation in The Croftlands Centre was an interesting personal “account” given by Chris Brown entitled 'My Carbon Footprint' on 5th March 2020. Following that we went into “lockdown”; after the summer we resumed our activities with Zoom sessions. Members interested in joining Zoom presentations are sent meeting and log-in details by email.
Our first Zoom session on 1st October 2020 was given by Roger Calvert on 'Fluid Mechanics: Why does your boat float funnel upwards? How does an aeroplane stay in the air? Will water flow uphill?'
This very successful initial session was followed by Zoom presentations on November 5th - 'The Earth/Moon Connection, How it Happened and How it has Developed' given by Alex Menarry, and on December 3rd – 'Passive and Active Immunity' presented by Dougie Paterson, and 'The Safety Testing of Medicinal Products' presented by Andy Renwick.
Future zoom sessions (at 2pm) are:-
February 4th – 'Mathematical Modelling with particular reference to Climate & Weather' – to be presented by Ann Eakins
March 4th – 'A Visit to the Rosse Telescope' – to be presented by Alex Menarry
April 1st – 'The Nature of Time' – to be presented by Kath Walley.
These sessions are open to any member of the Furness U3A. If you have not received emails about previous Zoom sessions and would like to join us for any of them, please email Andy Renwick.
