The FOD U3A and Coronavirus – An Update

As we stated in our original statement, your Committee has continued to monitor the situation and this afternoon’s Government announcement justifies further action.

I have been wondering since the beginning of last week whether we should cancel General Meetings because of the on-going hazard of Covid-19 but, until today, there have been no clear grounds for doing so. That decision was based on the assumption that everybody is taking the precautions recommended by the government, and that anybody infected recognises that fact and stays at home, or is taken to hospital. However, the CMO indicated today that some people infected might not notice, the symptoms being so mild, which significantly undermines my argument. And then the Prime Minister announced that all non-essential social gatherings should be avoided – and U3A meetings fall in that category!

Your Committee has therefore decided to cancel FOD U3A General Meetings (Thursday afternoon meetings) until further notice from today – the meeting this Thursday (18 March) will not be held.

We are not directing that meetings of individual groups be cancelled because that ought to be a decision of the members of those groups and their convenors. However, we fully support any decision to discontinue group activities, or to continue, in the current circumstances. We note that as getting out in the countryside is recommended, we expect the walking groups to continue!

We repeat our previous injunction that you all follow the government’s advice – principally washing hands; self-isolation if you have the identified symptoms; and avoiding non-essential social gatherings. If you do go into isolation, please let your group’s convenor, or any committee member know, so that we know what is going on in our branch and do not inadvertently compromise your self-imposed quarantine. It is especially important that you inform your group’s coordinator and any member of the committee if it is confirmed that you are infected with covid-19.

Your committee will continue to monitor the situation, we will issue further advice and/or instruction as, and when we deem it appropriate, so please don’t panic and continue enjoying yourselves.

Welcome to the Forest of Dean U3A - a branch of the University of the Third Age. We are one of over 900 U3As in Britain and in April 2015 we celebrated our 25th anniversary. We currently have around 250 members involved in more almost 30 activity groups.

The U3A is a national organisation for older people who are retired, semi-retired or no longer in employment, yet want to lead an active and fulfilling life. At the Forest of Dean U3A we have a range of groups catering for a variety of interests; click on the 'Groups' button and look at the kinds of things we do. A Newsletter is published monthly and contains details of all our interest groups, meeting dates and forthcoming events.

We hold a Monthly General Meeting (often involving a guest speaker) which is held on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Lydney Town Hall (1:45pm start). There is the opportunity to find out more about the various interest groups / activities, to join the Forest of Dean U3A and to chat with other members / friends before the main speaker. There is limited car parking at the Town Hall but there is a public car park at the Library - the post code is GL15 5DY. Go to the "Events" page to see the list of upcoming talks at the General meetings.

Forest of Dean U3A is an excellent way of making new friends as well as gaining new skills and interests. New members can be assured of a warm welcome so if you are interested please contact our Membership Secretary (see Contact Page) or simply come to a monthly meeting as a guest and "give us a try".

The annual membership fee is £10 per year from 1 July – 30 June. An Application form can be found by clicking the link on the right (if you want to fill it out prior to attending a group).
