The FOD U3A and Coronavirus – An Update

As we stated in our original statement, your Committee has continued to monitor the situation.

So far, there is nothing to suggest that your Committee’s intention to relaunch the walking groups in April is overly optimistic, although resumption of General Meetings in Lydney Town Hall is still somewhere off in the misty future. Restarting Group activities is up to the Conveners and their Group members to agree amongst themselves, taking due account of the prevailing threat and restrictions. Hopefully, we shall be able to have resumed something like the pattern of meetings and activities that we had established up to February 2020 by the end of this year.

However, we have set up a page on Facebook for the FoD U3A Branch Closed Group, which means that it will be accessible to current Branch Members only. It will allow general communication amongst Branch Members: primarily for discussions of items of general interest to the whole Branch and up-to-date notices of events – any suggestions for what could be included will be most welcome.

Just log into your Facebook account: find the FoD U3A page and apply for access. One of the Administrators will check your application and grant you access and you will then be able to visit the page any time you wish without any further formalities.

Welcome to the Forest of Dean U3A - a branch of the University of the Third Age. We are one of over 900 U3As in Britain and in April 2015 we celebrated our 25th anniversary. We currently have around 250 members involved in more almost 30 activity groups.

The U3A is a national organisation for older people who are retired, semi-retired or no longer in employment, yet want to lead an active and fulfilling life. At the Forest of Dean U3A we have a range of groups catering for a variety of interests; click on the 'Groups' button and look at the kinds of things we do. A Newsletter is published monthly and contains details of all our interest groups, meeting dates and forthcoming events.

We hold a Monthly General Meeting (often involving a guest speaker) which is held on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Lydney Town Hall (1:45pm start). There is the opportunity to find out more about the various interest groups / activities, to join the Forest of Dean U3A and to chat with other members / friends before the main speaker. There is limited car parking at the Town Hall but there is a public car park at the Library - the post code is GL15 5DY. Go to the "Events" page to see the list of upcoming talks at the General meetings.

Forest of Dean U3A is an excellent way of making new friends as well as gaining new skills and interests. New members can be assured of a warm welcome so if you are interested please contact our Membership Secretary (see Contact Page) or simply come to a monthly meeting as a guest and "give us a try".

The annual membership fee is £10 per year from 1 July – 30 June. An Application form can be found by clicking the link on the right (if you want to fill it out prior to attending a group).
