Jazz Appreciation Group
Hosted by John Badham
This is a series of interactive sessions of listening and discussion, following the history of Jazz and its development from its origins in New Orleans at the start of the twentieth century through its many forms to contemporary improvised and World music of today. (Not necessarily in chronological order.)
We listen to all styles of Jazz, following its progression and many of the characters and musicians who experimented and extemporised. Always pushing the music forward, looking for that something extra that would lift their solos or compositions above those of their peers.
We talk about what we hear and discuss our likes and dislikes. Some music will be easy on the ear or happy on the feet. Other music will be fascinating or beautiful and some downright challenging. Different people respond in different ways, all making for stimulating and enjoyable sessions and appreciating the rich diversity of the genre.
Ragtime, Blues and Gospel, through to New Orleans, Stride Piano, Chicago and Boogie Woogie. Swing and Big Band, Bebop, Cool, West Coast, Skiffle, Mainstream, The Revival Movement, Latin, The Trad Boom, Vocal, Fusion, Crossover, Modern Latin and Contemporary.
“Music you may never have heard before can be as fresh to you today as the day it was made.”
Our meetings are held in the Witherby Room at the West Dean Centre, Bream on the 3rd Thursday of the month, 2.00 - 4.00 pm
About your group host -
John Badham is an enthusiastic member of the FoDU3A. You just might have seen him playing Crib, Petanque, Kurling and Skittles.
