Forest Of Dean

Petanque

We are a friendly group who meet twice a month at the Forest Hills Golf Club, near Coleford.

The Petanque group meet at Forest Hills Golf Club, Coleford,GL16 7QD (on the B4226) on the 2nd Monday & 4th Tuesday of the month. From April to October we start at 2.00pm; from November to March we start at 1.30pm. For the game only the cost is free. For a tea or coffee in the club house afterwards it is £1.50 or you can buy an alcoholic drink from the bar.

For us, the social aspect of the game is much more important than winning so we don't take things too seriously but we do have fun! I'm not even sure we play the 'proper' rules - we did once but we didn't like them so we went back to our own U3A way of doing things.

Petanque is a simple game to learn and is suitable for everybody from those in their twenties to centenarians. If you can throw a ball, you can play Petanque. If you'd like to try the game, we always have spare boules for you to play with thanks to a kind gift from a former group member. A smaller and lighter set is available too if you'd prefer.

Many of us turn up to play during the Winter months but most don't - participation on any day is entirely up to the individual. Just turn up if you want to play but please note - our Winter games are frequently very chilly so wrap up warm if you decide to come.

We play in teams of three or four (sometimes more) on the three pitches at the golf club. Each session lasts for a couple of hours and then we decamp into the club who supply us with a nice cuppa. Please let me know if you'd like to try the game. You'll be most welcome. There's a button on this page to send me an email so I know you're coming.

Incidentally, parking at the golf club can sometimes be quite difficult (especially in the Summer) so it would be appreciated if people could car share.

Many thanks to Forest Hills Golf Club for the use of their petanque pitches and for supplying us with a much appreciated tea or coffee afterwards.
