Fordingbridge & District

Groups

Groups meet in the Group Leader's home or at an appropriate venue. Groups are led by a Group Leader who may or may not have expertise in the subject. Group members contribute to the sessions in order to maximise learning experience for the whole group.

Groups are self-funded and therefore some activities may incur a small charge eg. hire of hall, materials etc. When a group is held in the Group Leader's home, it is suggested that members pay 40p to cover the cost of refreshments. However, groups may choose to make alternative arrangements to cover costs. Once you have joined our U3A, if a group has vacancies and you would like to give the group a try to see if it is for you, we offer one taster session. If the group is not what you are looking for you can leave without embarrassment as long as you let the Leader know. You still need to pay any refreshment costs, session/visit costs or other usual group running expenses.

NEW GROUP ON OFFER!! Guitars ‘Plus’ Group
This group is aimed at amateur guitarists with some previous experience who are looking to either regain or improve their skills by playing in a group of similar ability. There’s no formal teaching, as we’ll develop as a group by coaching and learning from each other. We'll cover a wide range of popular music with guitars at their centre (e.g. pop, rock, folk, country, jazz, blues) – whatever takes our fancy. But there's also room for singing, simple percussion and other portable instruments to accompany them – that’s the ‘plus’!
The object is simply to enjoy ourselves by playing some good songs/tunes and maybe even make a public performance or two as and when we feel we’re ready. You don’t have to be able to read music as we’ll mainly play from song lyrics with chord symbols. Guitar tablature and standard musical notation can also be provided if that’s what you’re used to. And you definitely don’t need to be a Bruce Springsteen or a Sheryl Crow – just generally enthusiastic about guitar music.
It’s likely that we’ll meet on either a Thursday or Friday afternoon (2-4pm) each week, at a cost of around £3 per session to cover the venue hire and music copies. I’m hoping to run some free ‘taster’ sessions for U3A members during May and June, and any U3A member will be welcome to come along to see if it’s for them. Due to the size of the venue, it’s likely that the group number will need to be limited to about 12. Free off-road parking is available.
If you’re interested (or just curious), please contact the new group leader via the GROUP COORDINATOR link on the CONTACTS page to find out more!

The History of the Roman Empire Following the successful completion of this topic, the Group Leader is offering to run this again for a new set of members. Please contact the Group Coordinator to indicate your interest via the links on the Contact page.

French Groups suspended Please note that the French Groups have been suspended temporarily. Current Group members are, of course, aware of this.

Computer Buddies Needed The Computer Buddy system only works if there are members willing to share a bit of their knowledge with those who need help with a particular problem such as email or photos. There is no tutor or expert available! Therefore if a request goes out for assistance please make every effort to offer a little time. Thank you.

Groups with vacancies: These change frequently. This section will be updated once groups have settled after the Membership Renewal period. If you are interested in a particular group please contact the Group Coordinator via the contacts page. When a number of people are on a waiting list we try to start a new group.

The following Groups are open to all members: Bird Watching - Computer Buddies - Going Places - Walking

The Group Programme may be downloaded but is continually being updated. Please check with the Group Coordinator for specific days and times of groups you are interested in.
