Filey & District

Groups

At the core of Filey & District U3A are our Group activities which meet at various locations, times and days, in hired rooms or members' homes.
These groups are on a self-help basis and are run by members for members. Do you have a talent that you would like to share? if so let us know and we will help you set up a group to pass on your knowledge.

REMINDER
Please remember to take your ICE (In Case of Emergency) information with you when you attend any activity organised by Filey and District U3A. (In particular when you attend any trips/outings). Most mobile phones allow you to input your ICE details. Alternatively you could carry an ICE information card - blank cards are available from our Secretary.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL U3A ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN ARE AT THE MEMBERS OWN RISK.

Following the AGM in March 2018 an Overall Group Update will be produced here on a regular basis.

Week beginning 2 Dec 2019:

1. Theatre Group. Now in abeyance as no one has been found to take over the Organising role.

21 MARCH 2020

CANCELLATION OF FILEY & DISTRICT U3A ACTIVITIES DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS

WEEK BEGINNING 22 JUNE 2020:

Groups are still unable to meet up indoors.

Several of the Interest Groups (eg Bridge, ukelele, Spanish Conversation, Poetry) are meeting up remotely using video conferencing such as Zoom and by using email and telephone.

WEEK BEGINNING 6 JULY:

1. The Male Harmony Group has stopped meeting - due to ill Health and lack of numbers.

WEEK BEGINNING 28 SEPTEMBER 2020:

1. Natural History Group. The NATURAL HISTORY group is to lose its leaders! Sadly for us, Janet and David Pickersgill are planning to move out of Filey and relocate nearer their family, thus leaving the Natural History group in need of someone to take over. They have been taking small groups out frequently over the summer enabling the members to enjoy the good weather and the abundant wildlife. We do wish them well in their new home and send them our heartfelt thanks for all their work for Filey and District U3A over the years. Feast your eyes on the last of Janet’s nature photos in the September Newsletter. David and Janet you will be sorely missed.

WEEK BEGINNING 3 JAN 2021:

Following the new National Lockdown, only those Interest Groups meeting remotely (eg Bridge, Spanish Conversation, Ukelele, Poetry) are continuing to meet.

WEEK BEGINNING 10 MAY 2021:

The Badminton Group is no longer an authorised U3A Interest Group. See Group page for more information.

WEEK BEGINNING 24 MAY 2021

The latest Newsletter (May 21) contains up to date details of the status of many of the Interest Groups.
[SEE WELCOME PAGE FOR LINK TO MAY 21 NEWSLETTER]
Please note that there is one error in the status update.
ie Family History Group. Aileen is fully intending to continue running the group once they are able to meet again at the library. Our best wishes go to Aileen for a rapid recovery from her current indisposition and thank her for all her work with the group.

WEEK BEGINNING 19 JULY 2021

Up to date details giving Group Contact information and when each Group meets has been put in the "Members Information Booklet". This will be made available from 22 July at the u3a Monthly meeting.

The Third Age Trust issued their latest Covid-19 update giving advice on re-starting U3A Interest Group Activities - following Step 4 of the Government's Lockdown Easing Roadmap applicable from 19 July.
A copy of it was sent to all members and has also been put on the website in the GROUPS Section.

WEEK BEGINNING 20 SEPTEMBER 2021

1. Walking Groups

You will be aware that we have two groups at the moment that meet fortnightly. Peter Greaves leads the group that meets on Fridays and Phil Eastill the group that meets on Mondays. Walks are usually planned for about five miles.

Some walkers find this a bit too demanding and Wendy Eastill has offered to lead a group with a target of about two miles. The intention is to convene at 9.30 at the bus station in Filey on Mondays with Phil's 'five mile' group and then head off on separate walks. The plan is to start this extra group on MONDAY 4TH OCTOBER and all are welcome.

The idea is very simple, but if you have any questions about either of the walks, Wendy and Phil are on 01723 658582.

2. New Theatre and Film Group

We are ready to launch this new activity group. Many of you who were involved previously with the two separate groups may be interested in joining. The new group will be organised initially by me. I have a list of those who have expressed already an interest in the group and I will be contacting them.

All members will be welcome and I have arranged a meeting at Hunmanby Community Centre at 4.15pm on Tuesday 28th September to meet all those interested. The intention is to explore opinions on the scope of activities to satisfy the wide range of interests of members and to plan the operation and management of the group.

If you have any questions about the group and the meeting, please contact me on tony.lizdawson@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you.

Tony Dawson Group Coordinator

WEEK BEGINNING 27 SEPTEMBER 2021

1. Up to date copies of all of the different types of Insurance provided by TAT have been put in the LINKS Section.
To help Group Organisers carry out a Risk Assessment for their Activities, under current Covid-19 conditions, updated Risk Assessment Checklists have been put in the LINKS Section.

2. Handicrafts Group

We have a new group. Christine Keir-Thompson has agreed to lead it. Initially it will concentrate on crochet and knitting and will explore other skills for inclusion. The plan is to start in November. Eleanor Harris is helping to get the group started, so please contact her on 07807 474009 or Christine on 07788 988403 for more information.

3. Theatre and Film Group

At our first meeting this week we established a broad range of activities to cover every aspect of the subject. These include:-

Visits to live theatre productions - professional and amateur

Attending local theatre 'streamings' of live West End performances.

Viewing classic films

Talks from visiting professionals - performance and production

Circulating newsletters of drama performances on TV and key news about upcoming

events - and other related ideas to be developed as we go.

The meeting was well attended and we are ready to plan our first event, which will be tailored to the size of our group. This will be clearer from the response from you all to this news.

VENUE Our meeting was held at Hunmanby because of the one-off free availability of the room, BUT all future events that require a meeting place will be held in FILEY at a venue suitable for the number expected. So, for those interested in joining our group, please contact me on 01723 563173(from Sunday) or at tony.lizdawson@gmail.com

4. Art for Beginners

Margaret Crompton has recognised that there is demand for an additional group. She is prepared to organise the group if there is sufficient demand. Please contact her on 07540 078488 if you would like to be included and have any questions about how the group will operate.

5. Spanish Conversation

Janet Green regrets that she must give up leading this group. If anybody feels able to replace her, please call her on 01723 449940. Thanks Janet.
