Reading Group 2
When the Exe Valley u3a reading group had no room to take more members I started Reading Group Two. Since then a third group has been established as this is a very popular activity. Numbers are limited by the sets of ten books provided by the Devon Library Service, unless extra members can use e-readers or share books. In July every year the library issues a very large list of books available to reading groups. We choose twenty four of these to send in to the library on our Choices list. Each month they provide us with a set of one of the books from our list. The library charged £90 this year for this service, to which we all contributed. This method produces a range of genres so there is something for everyone but also some books we would not normally have chosen for ourselves. Even when our book for the month is not to everyone’s liking, we still enjoy a lively discussion about its literary merit or otherwise. In the pandemic lockdowns we continued on Zoom and met outside to exchange books. We now meet in the home of a group member. We meet at 2pm on the first Monday of the month.
