Saturday 8th December 2018 - Mince Pie Give-away

Evesham Mincepie Give-away 2018 Evesham Churches Together organise the Mince Pie Give-away and as the Evesham Concert Band played, the shoppers were invited to join in the carols and partake of a mince pie, all for free as a gesture of seasonal good will.

Friday 7th December 2018 - Broadway Late Night Shopping in the URC Church

Broadway Xmas 2018 in the URC The second of Broadway's late night shopping events this time playing in the URC church. The church was displaying Christmas trees which had been decorated by local schools and groups. Although slightly less footfall than the previous week there were many families with young children who came to see the trees. This meant frequent diversions from the programme order to requests for 'Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer' or 'Jingle Bells'. We also played some of the adults requests.

Being in the church is was not as cold as the previous week but we still appreciated the coffee and mince pie break half way through.

Saturday 1st December 2018 - Shoebox Send-off

For months Teams4U volunteers have been donating, collecting, sorting, wrapping and packing shoe boxes for under privileged children in poorer countries, mainly Eastern European. A short presentation is given with thanks to the volunteers as one of the last lorries of Shoeboxes is sent off. The Evesham Concert Band provided some festive music as people arrived, some carols during the service and the final send off song as people left to wave at the lorry.

Friday 30th November 2018 - Broadway Late Night Shopping, on the Green

Broadway Xmas 2018 on the Green We were invited by the Broadway Business Community to play Christmas music in the marquee on the Village Green during the first of their late night shopping events. The weather stayed dry which encouraged a good turnout. We started at 6:00pm and at 6:30 we were joined by Reverend Israel for a carol service and the illumination of the Tree of Light. We had a half hour break and a welcome hot drink from Tisanes Tea Room before starting our second half.

We were due to finish at 8:00 but as we still had an appreciative audience, including one or two who were dancing, we carried on until 8:15 when we finished with our traditional ending 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'.

Saturday 17th November 2018 - Evesham Light Festival

Light Festival in the Bandstand The Concert Band was asked to play during the Evesham Light Festival as the Lantern Parade made its way through Abbey Park. We were playing in the bandstand as the parade left the rowing club at 5:30pm and weaved it’s way through the park. As they left the park it was ‘running shoes on’ for a quick sprint up the hill in the dark to Market Square to meet the parade with music as they entered. We may have been out of breath but we certainly weren’t cold any more. In near Flash Mob fashion the first band members to arrive in the square started up the music as the others were still arriving and joining in. I wonder if it's given Roger another idea.

Sunday 4th November 2018 - Stoulton Church Remembrance

We will remember them Stoulton Village commemorated the end of WW1 in a moving service called 'Coming Home'. The local history volunteers had researched how events of the war had impacted on their community and produced an audio visual presentation. A small Group of musicians from the Concert Band had the privilege of providing the war themed music of the time period. We played rousing music as the current day residents reenacted proudly leaving for war and more sombre music when later returning. Those who did not return where represented by 8 silhouettes.

Saturday 15th September 2018 - Hampton Flower show

Our Saxophone line up Having played at this event last year we were pleased to be invited back for their second year. The weather was dry and mild but the wind did it’s best to disrupt proceedings by blowing our music about. We played two one hour sessions keeping to a program of cheerful familiar pieces befitting of the day. The band continued to play with the dog show going on in front of us and pony rides behind us, perhaps next year we should include some animal related tunes.

Saturday 21st April 2018 - Journey into Space .... and beyond

Journey into Space 21st April 2018 The Concert Band including Sue Sollis and other members of the Evesham Woodwind and Brass Ensemble, the Choir and the Play Reading Group presented their joint concert entitled ‘Journey into Space and Beyond’.

The first half concentrated on the magical wizardry of Harry Potter. The Play Readers led by Jill Moran opened with passages from the first Harry Potter book and Harry’s first sight of Hogwarts and after three loud knocks on the castle door the Band burst into sound with the very lively Hogwarts March. The Play Readers had fun giving a rather raucous rendition of Hogwarts Hymn which was followed by the Bands more reverent musical version reminiscent of all those old school hymns.

The Choir led by Paula Evans and accompanied by Chris Long then sang five pieces before the interval and returned after to sing five more pieces. The Band and Play Readers then returned to announce “We present Journey into Space, and beyond!"

Flyer The countdown began 10, 9, 8, the band and choir joined in, 7, 6, 5, the audience joined in 4, 3, 2, 1 and the band launched into ‘The Final Countdown’ with the words sung by soloist Margaret Wyatt. After the Play Readers introduction we passed Venus, Mars and Jupiter as interpreted by Gustav Holst, and found ourselves in the realms of sci-fi and time travel with themes from popular TV shows like Star Trek and Doctor Who. Telstar was among a number of pieces which gave us the opportunity to use the synthesiser while it was the banjo that took centre stage for ‘The Hitchikers Guide’.

The Choir joined the Band on stage for a lively performance of the ‘Red Dwarf’ theme to remind us of the Fun, Fun, Fun we were all having and we ended the evening in a galaxy far far away for our final piece, ‘Star Wars’.

The concert raised £550 for the Tracy Sollis Leukaemia Trust.
