French Conversation 2
This group, meeting on the first and third Thursday mornings, started in September 2016. French Conversation (now French Conversation 1) had been running successfully for some time but to ensure that everyone has a chance to participate fully and practise their French has had to set up a waiting list. This group is intended to provide a similar opportunity. We meet at the Appletree Barn restaurant at The Valley, Twyford - of course free parking helps, and there's a free top up of filter coffee up to 11 a.m.
The emphasis is on speaking, listening, reading, and other activities in French on subjects of interest to members of the group and hopefully will be a pleasurable experience for amateurs of the language with a range of proficiency, as well as increasing our understanding of some aspects of French culture and current affairs, for example by working together on extracts from the French press which are circulated in advance of the meeting. We have covered legal bans on wearing the "burkini" on French beaches, Hinckley Point and EDF, the extraordinary position in which French imams now find themselves, tourism and "le shopping", the Dreyfus affair, environmental pollution, Brexit, protection of personal data, "inclusive" language, chemical pollution from the first world war, the importance of making mistakes in scientific research, and the Benalla affair.
On the lighter side, after our coffee (and English) pause we include each week some fun activities and games using French language skills and vocabulary, some of which are focused on French history and geography, others of which are based on fables poems or songs in French; a new feature is a regular selection of colloquial phrases to improve conversational skills, and the occasional crossword.
A number of new members joined the group in autumn 2017 , which has meant that we are at present not able to accept more new members, although we currently have no names on our waiting list. Anyone interested in setting up or participating in a possible third French conversation group please contact me.
Please get in touch with me without commitment if you are interested, or simply being on the mailing list and getting to see the texts we are looking at. If you ring and leave a message please ensure that you leave an address or email address, or that I can leave a message on your phone in reply
