We have Association meetings twice a year, and these are currently held in St Cedd's Hall, part of the Chelmsford Cathedral site - we endeavour to make these meetings interesting, practical and useful.
At our last meeting on Friday May 11th 2018, we had a visit from Sam Mauger, Chief Executive of the Third Age Trust, and talks from Barry Linton (Cyber Crime), Joyce Woodham (one-to-one help in Primary Schools), and Jennifer Simpson (Shared Learning Projects).
Sadly there was no Study Day in 2018, and there will not be one in 2019. One of the problems at The Plume School was actually locating the Rooms that the courses were held in. There was however, some interest in running local Study Days, but nothing was decided at this stage.
Last year we had our first Webmasters' forum. This year we had a second meeting on 13th April, this time on Website Management. It was very well lead by Peter Lee again and was well attended.
On 20th August we put on a day's Finance Workshop very ably lead by John Bent and John Ellison. It was well attended and there was some excellent feedback from the day. The slides were also sent round to all of the U3A contacts and made very interesting and informative reading. We might try to arrange a repeat session later in the year.
This year's Association Quiz was entitled 'Brain of Essex'. It was held on Thursday June 7th at the United Reform Church in New London Road, Chelmsford. The event attracted teams of 8 from 12 U3As from across Essex. Before the Quiz began refreshments in form of Coffee, Tea and Biscuits were available for everyone. The questions although of General Knowledge nature were drawn from a wide range of subjects and the competition amongst the teams was intense. There was a break midway so that the teams could recharge their thoughts with more refreshments or with food that members had brought with them before tackling the second part of the Quiz. At the end of the event the scores on the scoreboard indicated that it was a closely contested quiz and the final result being that Waltham Abbey U3A had retained the Trophy that they won last year.
The Quiz over it is now time to thank Ken and Maureen for all their work in researching, setting the questions & the audio recordings also providing the electrical appliances including microphones & speakers. Thanks too for Ken who performed the task of Quizmaster and Maureen for recording the scores on the large board, of the 12 teams of 8 members from the various U3A's. All the answer papers were carefully marked by Joe and Pat Nutton who are members of the Chelmsford U3A, they too deserve our thanks. So let us recap on the results - In 3rd place - Stanford -le-Hope, 2nd place - Maldon and in 1st Place - Waltham Abbey.
The Winners - Waltham Abbey, were presented with their Trophy By Chris Bellamy the Essex Association Chairman.
So congratulations to them. You can see some photographs of the Winning Team on this webpage.
So don't be complacent Waltham Abbey, the other 11 U3A's will be after your Crown next year.
Thank you in advance for all those who have agreed to perform the same roles for our Quiz in 2019.
At the November Association Meeting it was decided amongst those U3A members present, that there would be a Quiz in 2019. It would be in either June or July, and the venue is likely to be the URC Church in New London Road, Chelmsford. So watch this page for details.
