MONDAY MARCH 23RD 2020

National office have suggested that as many members as possible sign up to their Facebook page.
U3A keeping in touch
Lots of members are posting ideas and information regarding many online sites that can be used during the isolation period.
.
For instance:
.
Scrabble players
Classic Words
Words with friends
Wordfeud
Lexulous

Bridge players
English bridge union website

Zoom is a useful way to keep in touch with groups, you can host a group for between 1 and 100 people, at present it has a 40 minute time limit per meeting but there is talk that they are going to increase that during the crisis. Also if two members sign up, when one 40 minute meeting ends another member could start another 40 minute session, our members are certainly becoming very resourceful.

Singing groups
Gareth Malone is setting up a singing group, sending out material so that people can sing and then send in their efforts, just google Gareth Malone and see what he's up to.

Online courses
National office suggests a website called Chatterpack.net
It's a list of Free online resources for boredom-busting

Art groups
Check out The Isolation Art Challenge

Dining Clubs
Meeting via Zoom and all cooking the same meal and then sitting down in their own homes but linked up via Zoom for lively conversation.

As I find more i'll post them. If anyone has ideas please email U3AEpsom@gmail.com

STAY SAFE

Covid-19 and the U3A

Please read the recent post on the latest news page regarding group activities during the current health alert

TUESDAY 10TH MARCH 2020

JAZZ GROUP

This afternoon about 40 members enjoyed an afternoon of songs and anecdotes from Geoff Hiscott
The constraints of covid-19 meant that members sat 1 metre apart and signing in and tea and coffee was on a self service basis but that didn't stop us enjoying ourselves, with the occasional refrain from members on the chorus of some of the better known songs.

TUESDAY 10TH MARCH 2020

PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY

This morning the inaugural meeting of a new practical philosophy group took place.
This was an idea put forward by one of our members Vinod in late January.

Below are his comments on how this morning went:

Almost a full house enjoyed a full and open discussion, including the core functions of the group. The primary focus of the group is to enjoy exploring everyday questions, against a philosophical background, without making it too academic, complicated or abstract. Review our own thinking through listening and learning, accepting differences, in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Above all, to focus on practicality and simplicity.
We agreed to meet 3rd Tuesday of each month at 10.00am

This highlights ideas in action.

If you have an idea for a group we can help make it happen and it's not that difficult

TUESDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2020

JAZZ GROUP OUTING - ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC

This evening members of the Jazz Group went up to London to see the Academy Big Band - Stompin at the Savoy.

Some members made their own way up to the Academy but Mike Stevens, Group leader arranged a coach for any members who preferred to travel that way
.
The show was directed by the maestro Keith Nichols who many of us have seen at the monthly meetings and also at the Christmas Concert. The concert showcased the talents of 19 of the students at the Royal Academy.

They played a brilliant selection of music directed in his own inimitable fashion by Keith Nichols. The singer had a beautiful voice and all of the musicians got a chance to shine.

The grand finale of the concert was the Battle of the Bands with two amazing drummers.

It was also a chance to start discussing how we would be publicising our U3A on our Open House event in May and also National Day in June.
