Basic First Aid Techniques
Please note: There is no meeting in February
The group explores the principles and practice of First Aid. Group members are taken through the Red Cross General First Aid course covering the aims and priorities of First Aid, accident management, unconsciousness, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dealing with people who have had heart attacks, dealing with people who are unconscious, suffered blood loss, burns, and fractures, and other injurious and potentially life threatening conditions.
This is a non-certificated course and is intended for interest only. Nonetheless, those who attend will gain some basic First Aid knowledge and skills.
Practical exercises accompany theory and members will learn how to put patients into the recovery position and how to apply CPR.
The programme runs on the second Tuesday of every month from October to May inclusive with sessions running from 2.45 to 4.15pm. The group meets in Theydon Bois Village Hall. These sessions run immediately after Keep Fit.
Meetings take place in the main hall so there is space for large numbers of members. There is a small charge made to each member who joins this group of £1 per meeting as a contribution towards hall hire costs and to cover photocopying expenses - the £8 to cover all sessions will be collected at the October meeting. Members receive notes in hard copy or can elect to receive them electronically via email.
Members should also note the links on the right-hand side of this page to instructional videos produced by St Johns Ambulance that also cover the First Aid topics included in this course.
The group leader is Doug Harryman who is a fully qualified Red Cross First Aid Trainer.
